{"id":544,"date":"2012-08-25T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-08-25T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/08\/4g-data-caps-and-prices.html"},"modified":"2012-08-25T08:00:00","modified_gmt":"2012-08-25T12:00:00","slug":"4g-data-caps-and-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/08\/4g-data-caps-and-prices.html","title":{"rendered":"4G data caps and prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nIt may be\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/08\/4g-wireless-internet-speeds.html\">\nfast<\/a>,\nbut there are some drawbacks to\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/08\/verizon-or-at-t-4g-in-lowndes-county.html\">\n4G wireless Internet access,<\/a>\nnamely data limits and significant prices.\nHere&#8217;s\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.verizonwireless.com\/b2c\/homefusion\/hf\/main.do\">\nVerizon&#8217;s table for their\nHomeFusion Broadband<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.verizonwireless.com\/b2c\/homefusion\/hf\/main.do\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b01761765d7d2970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b01761765d7d2970c-pi.jpg\"   width=\"219\" height=\"151\"  \/><\/a>\n<table style=\"float:center;\" >\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>Monthly Data Allowance <\/th><th>Monthly Access<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>10GB<\/td>\n<td>$60<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>20GB<\/td>\n<td>$90<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>30GB<\/td>\n<td>$120<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nI would bet the other companies&#8217; caps and prices are pretty much the same.\nFor web browsing, you&#8217;ll probably never run over that lowest 10GB\/month limit.\nSo if you want to tweet or facebook or tumblr or email with your friends,\n4G probably will work fine for you.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIf you do a lot of Skype or listening to music over the net,\nyou might run over.\nIf you watch a lot of videos, or you want to do video conferencing,\nyou can definitely run over.\nHere&#8217;s Verizon&#8217;s\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.verizonwireless.com\/freedom\/datacalculator.html\">\ntable of estimates, and they have a calculator along with that<\/a>:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\nEmail (Text Only) = 10 KB\n<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/cnettv.cnet.com\/verizon-homefusion-broadband\/9742-1_53-50124374.html\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b01761765d7da970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b01761765d7da970c-pi.jpg\"   width=\"160\" height=\"120\"  \/><\/a>\nTypical Web Page Lookup* = 1MB\n<br \/>\nAudio Streaming = 51 MB\/hr\n<br \/>\nVideo Streaming (Standard Def) = 500MB\/hr\n<br \/>\nVideo Streaming (HIgh Def) = 1.6GB\/hr\n<br \/>\nDigital Photo Download\/Upload (Hi-Res) = 5 MB\n<br \/>\n4G VoIP = 67MB\/hr\n<br \/>\n4G VoIP with Video = 254MB\/hr\n<br \/>\n<br \/>\n1 MB = 1,024KB\n<br \/>\n1 GB = 1,024MB\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nVideos of a single VLCIA meeting can run 2 gigabytes,\nand there are lots of other meetings going on around here.\nNot every local elected or appointed board has 5 minute meetings\nlike the Lowndes County Commission.\nMany run for an hour or more.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nEven though I&#8217;m a pretty intensive Internet user, I&#8217;m considering getting\n4G home service.\nSomeday AT&amp;T may get around to running fiber for their uverse service\nout here in my sparsely populated area of the county,\nand then we might be able to get\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.att.com\/u-verse\/shop\/?WT.srch=1&amp;wtPaidSearchTerm=uverse#fbid=Lh_hXyu1N-n\">\n3-24Mbps down (and unknown speeds up)\nfor $38 to $63\/month.<\/a>\nSome year.\nOr never, if wireless speeds continue to leapfrog even fiber speeds.\nOK, real fiber speeds such as in Finland, Japan, France, Korea, or dozens\nof other countries are 100Mbps or up, but U.S. telcos and cablecos\nare not going to offer speeds like that\nuntil they&#8217;ve milked every penny they can get out of slower speeds first.\nNot to mention what the U.S. carriers are really selling with fiber is TV,\nwhich is a dying broadcast medium, fast being left in the dust by the\nparticipatory social Internet.\nWho do you know under 30 who gets their news from TV anymore?\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAnyway, I don&#8217;t know whether 4G Internet service would work for you,\nbut at least it&#8217;s another option.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It may be fast, but there are some drawbacks to 4G wireless Internet access, namely data limits and significant prices.
