USGS Funding Agreement for Hwy 122 Stream Gauge\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p style=\"font-style:normal\">\r\nThis time Emergency Director Ashley Tye said it&#8217;s on the Little River.\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.okraparadisefarms.com\/blog\/2009\/04\/road-closings-lowndes-county-georgia.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;width:164px;\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7181\/7020601195_3a3cdc9f4e_o.png\"><\/a>\r\nHe said during ihe 2009 floods the county only had a gauges on the\r\nWithlacoochee River at Skipper Bridge and US 84, and no way to\r\nmonitor the level of the Little River,\r\nso he contacted USGS, who supplied and installed the equipment.\r\nThe county since then pays for the maintenance.\r\nIf something breaks, USGS comes and fixes it.\r\nHe&#8217;s also worked with the National Weather Service to establish flood stages\r\nfor better warning for residents.\r\nIt&#8217;s time to renew the funding.\r\n<p>\r\n\r\nCommissioner Demarcus Marshall wanted to know how many inspections\r\nwere carried out by USGS.\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/valdostadailytimes.com\/local\/x1155929887\/Lowndes-fights-flooding\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/d6673sr63mbv7.cloudfront.net\/archive\/x1449230537\/g0a0000000000000000beadf99284dc0f6cb35a2e4cfef291805f66fd6a.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nAnswer:<!--more--> Once a month, or more frequently if they see something odd in the data.\r\n<p>\r\nMarshall said he was wondering because in a storm the water&#8217;s going to rise.\r\n<p>\r\nAnswer:\r\nYes, and during the floods in 2009 they came out 2 and 3 times a week.\r\nThe gauge at Skipper Bridge was underwater,\r\nand there are pictures of guys in boats at US 84 taking readings.\r\nThis is one way the calibrate it.\r\nThe closest office is Tifton, and they have to deal with all the\r\nsurrounding counties.\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/08\/nws-advanced-hydrologic-prediction-service-weather-forecast-office-tallahassee-fl-2012-08-14.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b0167694562fe970b-pi.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nThe last time the river stream gauge funding came up was I think\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/09\/lowndes-county-continuing-funding-for-usgs-hwy-122-stream-gauge-ashley-tye-lcc-2012-09-10.html\">10 September 2012<\/a>.\r\nAt that time I thought Emergency Director Ashley Tye was referring\r\nto the Withlacoochee River, but he actually didn&#8217;t say which river,\r\nand USGS only lists a gauge on the Little River at GA 122,\r\nnot on the Withlacoochee.\r\nIf the county put agenda packet information online with the agenda,\r\nlike\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/03\/valdosta-vimeo.html\">\r\nfor example Augusta-Richmond County and Glynn County do<\/a>,\r\nthat sort of confusion wouldn&#8217;t be so easy.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nHere&#8217;s\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RyjsgKA0pHA&#038;list=PLshUv86fYkiEKK_uj0iF5k2jjUae0m0lT&#038;index=5\">\r\nthe video:<\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align:center;font-size:80%\">\r\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RyjsgKA0pHA\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\r\n<br>\r\nGauging the Little River west of Hahira\r\n<br>\r\nWork Session, Lowndes County Commission (LCC),\r\n<br>\r\nVideo by Gretchen Quarterman for Lowndes Area Knowledge Exchange (LAKE),<br> Valdosta, Lowndes County, Georgia, 26 August 2013.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"After the 2009 floods, Lowndes County agreed to help USGS fund a stream gauge on the Little River west of Hahira.
