This is where\nfuture growth lies. Like upgrading a mobile phone, when people see\nthe benefits, they will discard old models in a flash.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nOf course, true sustainability goes further than pollution control.\nCity planners must look beyond municipal limits and analyze flows of\nresources \u2014\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/08\/remediating-a-building-in-downtown-valdosta-ron-jackson-of-south-georgia-solar-power.html\">\nenergy<\/a>,\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/04\/earth-day-and-valdosta-farm-days-saturday-21-april-2012.html\">\nfood<\/a>,\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/08\/clean-streams-to-attract-business-al-browning.html\">\nwater<\/a>, and\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/08\/changes-to-lowndes-countys-unified-land-development-code-uldc-glpc-2012-08-27.html\">\npeople<\/a> \u2014\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/07\/historical-population-lowndes-county-georgia.html\">\ninto<\/a> and\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/07\/invest-in-our-future-now-or-watch-our-kids-leave-demarcus-marshall-for-lowndes-county-commission-district-4-baseball-2012-0-1.html\">\nout of<\/a> their cities.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWorldwide, we are seeing a heterogeneous collection of cities\ninteracting in a way that could have far-reaching influence on how\nEarth&#39;s entire life-support system evolves. These cities are\nlearning from one another, building on good ideas and jettisoning\npoorer ones. Los Angeles took decades to implement pollution\ncontrols, but other cities, like Beijing, converted rapidly when\nthey saw the benefits. In the coming decades, we may see a global\nsystem of interconnected sustainable cities emerging.
