\nThis grassroots diversity in \u201cgreen policymaking\u201d makes\neconomic sense. \u201cSustainable cities\u201d attract the\ncreative, educated people who want to live in a pollution-free,\nmodern urban environment that suits their lifestyles. This is where\nfuture growth lies. Like upgrading a mobile phone, when people see\nthe benefits, they will discard old models in a flash.\n<\/p>\n

\nOf course, true sustainability goes further than pollution control.\nCity planners must look beyond municipal limits and analyze flows of\nresources \u2014\n\nenergy<\/a>,\n\nfood<\/a>,\n\nwater<\/a>, and\n\npeople<\/a> \u2014\n\ninto<\/a> and\n\nout of<\/a> their cities.\n<\/p>\n

\nWorldwide, we are seeing a heterogeneous collection of cities\ninteracting in a way that could have far-reaching influence on how\nEarth's entire life-support system evolves. These cities are\nlearning from one another, building on good ideas and jettisoning\npoorer ones. Los Angeles took decades to implement pollution\ncontrols, but other cities, like Beijing, converted rapidly when\nthey saw the benefits. In the coming decades, we may see a global\nsystem of interconnected sustainable cities emerging. If successful,\neveryone will want to join the club.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n\n<\/a>\nAnd counties, and regions, and watersheds, of course.\nAs Mayor Julian Castro of San Antonio said, there is a\n\n"nexus between sustainability and job creation."<\/a>\nWe don't have to wait for San Antonio or Los Angeles or Beijing or\nAtlanta to lead the way:\n\nwe can get on with it right here where we are.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n
