\nTEPCO said there was no possibility of a tsunami large enough to knock
\nout Fukushima Daiichi<\/a>.
\nPlant Hatch is the same design as Fukushima, and while a tsunami
\nreally is unlikely at Hatch, for all we know Hatch
\nstill has substandard fire protection<\/a>
\nand the risk if Hatch does go bad is like the risk if a French reactor
\ngoes bad:

\n(or larger than Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, and north Florida) plus radioactive contamination of
\nthe aquifer we drink out of.<\/p>\n

\nAside from its location in an earthquake-prone tsunami zone,
\nFukushima Daichi was sited above a major aquifer. That critical
\nreality has been missing from nearly all discussion of the accident
\nsince it occurred.\n<\/p>\n

\nThere can be little doubt at this point that the water in that
\nunderground lake has been thoroughly contaminated.\n<\/p>\n

\nIn the wake of the March 11, 2011, disaster, Tepco led the public to
\nbelieve that it had largely contained the flow of contaminated water
\ninto the Pacific. But now it admits that not only was that a lie,
\nbut that the quantities of water involved—apparently some
\n400,000 gallons per day—are very large.\n<\/p>\n

\nSome of that water may be flowing from the aquifer. Much of it also,
\nsimply enough, flows down Japan’s steep hillsides, through the site
\nand into the sea.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
