{"id":5051,"date":"2013-08-08T18:47:36","date_gmt":"2013-08-08T22:47:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/?p=5051"},"modified":"2013-08-08T18:53:12","modified_gmt":"2013-08-08T22:53:12","slug":"fukushima-has-contaminated-its-aquifer-what-about-our-aquifer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/08\/fukushima-has-contaminated-its-aquifer-what-about-our-aquifer.html","title":{"rendered":"Fukushima has contaminated its aquifer; what about our aquifer?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\r\nFukushima is dumping radioactive water into its aquifer.\r\nPlant Hatch is the same design and sits above the Floridan Aquifer\r\nwe drink out of.\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/fukushima-is-still-news.over-blog.com\/article-frozen-soil-wall-to-block-radioactive-water-118193841.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/img.over-blog.com\/320x375\/5\/60\/51\/72\/mid-November-2012\/asahi-frozen-wall.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nCan&#8217;t happen here?\r\nOn 19 December 2001\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2011\/05\/27\/as_japan_earthquake_tsunami_risk\/\">\r\nTEPCO said there was no possibility of a tsunami large enough to knock\r\nout Fukushima Daiichi<\/a>.\r\nPlant Hatch is the same design as Fukushima, and while a tsunami\r\nreally is unlikely at Hatch, for all we know Hatch\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/01\/substandard-fire-protection-at-nuclear-plant-hatch.html\">still has substandard fire protection<\/a>\r\nand the risk if Hatch does go bad is like the risk if a French reactor\r\ngoes bad:\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/06\/twice-french-gdp-and-soil-contamination-as-big-as-france-plus-germany-the-real-cost-of-a-bad-french-nuclear-accident.html\">\r\nsoil contamination the size of France and Germany<\/a>\r\n(or larger than Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, and north Florida) plus radioactive contamination of\r\nthe aquifer we drink out of.\r\n<p>\r\n\r\nHarvey Wasserman wrote for the Progress today,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.progressive.org\/fukushima-nightmare-gets-worse\">\r\nThe Fukushima Nightmare Gets Worse<\/a>,<!--more-->\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/nuclear-news.net\/2012\/10\/26\/harvey-wasserman-lists-americas-rust-bucket-nuclear-reactors\/\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/antinuclearinfo.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/wasserman-harvey.jpg?w=162&#038;h=150\"><\/a>\r\nAside from its location in an earthquake-prone tsunami zone,\r\nFukushima Daichi was sited above a major aquifer. That critical\r\nreality has been missing from nearly all discussion of the accident\r\nsince it occurred.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nThere can be little doubt at this point that the water in that\r\nunderground lake has been thoroughly contaminated.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nIn the wake of the March 11, 2011, disaster, Tepco led the public to\r\nbelieve that it had largely contained the flow of contaminated water\r\ninto the Pacific. But now it admits that not only was that a lie,\r\nbut that the quantities of water involved&mdash;apparently some\r\n400,000 gallons per day&mdash;are very large.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nSome of that water may be flowing from the aquifer. Much of it also,\r\nsimply enough, flows down Japan&#8217;s steep hillsides, through the site\r\nand into the sea.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nDownhill from Plant Hatch is the Altamaha River.\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/18ZRUUs782g\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/i1.ytimg.com\/vi\/18ZRUUs782g\/mqdefault.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nBBC News provided\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/18ZRUUs782g\">\r\na visual inspection of the broken Fukushima\r\nsite above its aquifer<\/a>:\r\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">\r\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/18ZRUUs782g\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/why-are-you-gambling-on-nuclear-instead-of-solar-gloria-tatum-so-2013-05-22.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5339\/9207663890_204165a303_m.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nAs\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/why-are-you-gambling-on-nuclear-instead-of-solar-gloria-tatum-so-2013-05-22.html\">\r\nSouthern Company CEO Tom Fanning said at the SO stockholder meeting in May<\/a>,\r\n<blockquote>\r\nThe technology of Fukushima is old nuclear technology.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nYep, the same technology as at Plant Hatch.\r\nIt&#8217;s great that Fanning thinks the new technology at Plant Vogtle\r\ndoesn&#8217;t have the same problems.\r\nBut what if it has different problems with the same outcome?\r\nIt&#8217;s time to ask again the question Gloria Tatum asked him:\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/why-are-you-gambling-on-nuclear-instead-of-solar-gloria-tatum-so-2013-05-22.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5509\/9207662504_337a8260d2_n.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nTom and gentlemen and ladies, why are you gambling the company&#8217;s\r\nfuture and the health of their environment and their citizens on\r\nantiquated, dangerous and very expensive nuclear energy, when the\r\nSoutheast is an untapped gold mine of safe, clean and cheap solar\r\nenergy. If Germany &mdash; which is a much colder country &mdash;\r\ncan meet half of their energy needs from solar in just a few years,\r\nwhy can&#8217;t Georgia?\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nWhat level of disaster will it take at Fukushima,\r\nalready way beyond Three Mile Island, cumulatively worse than Chernobyl\r\nand rapidly getting even worse, will it take before everyone\r\ngets the picture:\r\nwe can&#8217;t afford the risk of nuclear power.\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Fukushima is dumping radioactive water into its aquifer.
