\r\n\r\n\"Randy<\/a>\r\nSouth Georgia Medical Center’s Engineering Department hosted an open\r\nhouse for the hospital’s new $10 million emergency power plant on\r\nJuly 16. During the opening ceremonies,\r\n\r\nSGMC CEO Randy Sauls<\/a>\r\nrecognized guests and gave a special thanks to the construction\r\nteams for confronting the challenges and bringing the project to\r\nfruition. Mr. Sauls also commended Valdosta Electric and the SGMC\r\nEngineering Department for the 12 minutes of downtime in 530 hours\r\nof cutover time. Cutover activity involved moving the backup power\r\nsupply from the original power plant over to the new one.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n\"Trav<\/a>\r\n\r\nTrav Paulk with Valdosta Electric<\/a> thanked the\r\n\r\nHospital Authority of Valdosta & Lowndes County, Georgia<\/a>\r\nfor\r\n\r\nusing Valdosta Electric<\/a> and a\r\nhost of other local contractors to complete this big task. Paulk \r\nreminded everyone of the almost daily rainfall that was experienced \r\nlast winter and spring and how his crews would spend the morning \r\npumping water out of the construction site only to have it refilled\r\nby the afternoon rains. By looking at the beautiful building and \r\nlandscaped surroundings today, you would never know those problems \r\nexisted.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nThe power plant was designed and built to provide emergency power\r\nfor the SGMC Main Campus including the new Dasher Memorial Heart\r\nCenter and Patient Tower. The power plant houses 42 miles of cables\r\nand conduit. When the big diesel generators are fired up the system\r\nuses 180 gallons of diesel fuel per hour to operate key systems\r\nwithin the hospital.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nThe original power plant was opened in the 1950s with upgrades to \r\nequipment in the 1980s. The new power plant is one of the most \r\nsophisticated of its kind.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
