PCBs have been shown to cause cancer in animals. PCBs have\r\nalso been shown to cause a number of serious non-cancer health\r\neffects in animals, including effects on the immune system,\r\nreproductive system, nervous system, endocrine system and other\r\nhealth effects. Studies in humans provide supportive evidence for\r\npotential carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects of PCBs. The\r\ndifferent health effects of PCBs may be interrelated, as alterations\r\nin one system may have significant implications for the other\r\nsystems of the body.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\nWhy it matters that PCBs are in that landfill,\r\nalso\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/wastes\/hazard\/tsd\/pcbs\/about.htm\">\r\naccording to US EPA<\/a>:\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nPrior to the 1979 ban, PCBs entered the environment during their\r\nmanufacture and use in the United States. Today PCBs can still be\r\nreleased into the environment from poorly maintained hazardous waste\r\nsites that contain PCBs; illegal or improper dumping of PCB wastes;\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.catawbariverkeeper.org\/issues\/library-of-documents-on-pcbs\/pcb-problem-not-easily-fixed-water-experts-say\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.catawbariverkeeper.org\/issues\/library-of-documents-on-pcbs\/pcb-problem-not-easily-fixed-water-experts-say\/image_mini\"><\/a>\r\nleaks or releases from electrical transformers containing PCBs; and\r\ndisposal of PCB-containing consumer products into municipal or other\r\nlandfills not designed to handle hazardous waste. PCBs may also be\r\nreleased into the environment by the burning of some wastes in\r\nmunicipal and industrial incinerators.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\nOnce in the environment, PCBs do not readily break down and\r\n\r\ntherefore may remain for long periods of time cycling between air,\r\nwater, and soil. PCBs can be carried long distances and have been\r\nfound in snow and sea water in areas far away from where they were\r\nreleased into the environment. As a consequence, PCBs are found all\r\nover the world. In general, the lighter the form of PCB, the further\r\nit can be transported from the source of contamination.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/when-contamination-gets-into-the-watershed.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;width:375px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ec.gc.ca\/eau-water\/6A7FB7B2-4406-4C62-A1D7-C980DDFAF247\/a5f8e.gif\"><\/a>\r\nPCBs can accumulate in the leaves and above-ground parts of plants\r\nand food crops. They are also taken up into the bodies of small\r\norganisms and fish. As a result, people who ingest fish may be\r\nexposed to PCBs that have bioaccumulated in the fish they are\r\ningesting.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nWe need to know what&#8217;s in that landfill.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"What hazardous waste was accepted at Veolia&#8217;s Pecan Row Landfill that got a $27,500 fine from GA EPD this January?
