What is Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST)?<\/H3>\r\nAs of July 1, 1985, Georgia law enabled local governments to collect\r\nSPLOST proceeds for capital improvement projects that would\r\notherwise be paid for with General Fund or property tax dollars.\r\nSPLOST stands for Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, which is a\r\none-cent sales tax allowing for the collection of the penny on every\r\ndollar to fund specifc projects that are approved by voters. SPLOST\r\nmust be approved by voters in a referendum in order to be enacted.\r\nThe collection of the tax lasts for six years; expenditures must be\r\naudited annually. The proceeds of the tax must be spent for capital\r\n(non-operating) items by the county government and participating\r\ncities within the county and in accordance with the list approved by\r\nvoters. While through an intergovernmental agreement, counties and\r\ncities can receive SPLOST funds, SPLOST is a county tax.\r\n

What has SPLOST I-VI Funded?<\/H3>\r\nSince inception, SPLOST collections I-VI have funded projects and\r\nimprovements throughout Lowndes County and the cities of Valdosta,\r\nHahira, Lake Park, Remerton and Dasher. Your pennies at work:\r\n
