If passed by both houses, the law would make New Jersey\nonly the third state to require charter schools to face a local\nreferendum.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nFirst proposed last year, the new bill has been toughened for the\nnew session. Amendments filed with the bill would make those\nreferendums retroactive for as many as 30 urban and suburban schools\nawaiting their final charters.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe votes would come after the state&#8217;s preliminary approval, but\noften as much as a year can lapse before the final charter is\ngranted and a school can open.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nNJ bill A1877 seems to have\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.njleg.state.nj.us\/bills\/BillView.asp?BillNumber=A1877\">\ngotten stuck in the NJ state Senate Education Committee back in May.<\/a>\nIt has 21 sponsors, starting with\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.njleg.state.nj.us\/members\/bio.asp?Leg=203\">\nPatrick Diegnan (D-Middlesex),<\/a>\nshown in the picture above.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nRelated bill A2147\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.njleg.state.nj.us\/bills\/BillView.asp?BillNumber=A2147\">\ngot as far as a second reading in the Assembly in February.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nCharter schools in Georgia already have to be approved by local school boards.\nLet&#8217;s not give up that local control.\nVote No on the charter school referendum in November.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Here&#8217;s another potential charter school referendum that BallotPedia doesn&#8217;t seem to have caught yet, in New Jersey.
