About 96 percent of that money has come from\ndonors outside of Georgia.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nDonors include Wal-Mart heiress Alice Walton, politically\nwell-connected law firms and for-profit companies that are operating\ncharter schools in Georgia.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nHere&#39;s\n<a href=\"http:\/\/media.ethics.ga.gov\/Search\/Campaign\/Campaign_ByContributions_RFR.aspx?NameID=17639&amp;FilerID=NC2012000048&amp;CDRID=68943&amp;Name=Families+for+Better+Public+Schools+&amp;Year=2012&amp;Report=75+days+Before+Date+of+Election+-+Ballot+-+11%2F6%2F2012\">\nthe Georgia campaign finance report for Families for Better Public Schools,<\/a>\nwhich shows Alice Walton of Bentonville AR in for $250,000, K12 Inc. of Herndon VA in for $100,000,\nCharter Schools USA of Ft. Lauderdale FL in for $50,000,\nalso J.C. Huizenga and National Heritage Academies, both of Grand Rapids MI,\neach in for $25,000.\nThat&#39;s $450,000 from those five biggest donors, all out of state.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWhat about opposition money; where&#39;s it coming from?\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nA coalition of groups opposing the amendment, Vote Smart, has raised\n$80,951, mostly from traditional school officials like teachers,\nprincipals and superintendents who say more charter schools and more\nstate money for them would threaten the funding of already\ncash-strapped traditional public schools.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nSo we have big out-of-state money funding demolishing our public schools,\nand public school people spending some of what little money they have\ndefending them.\nI know which side I choose.\nWhich side are you on?\n<\/p>\n<p>\nDo we want to turn our public schools into private corporate fiefdoms?\nIf not, vote No on the charter school amendment in November.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Why does Alice Walton want, to the tune of $250,000, for Atlanta to be able to force charter schools on local areas that don&#39;t want them?
