\n(we won, yay!), Peru is busily providing solar power for almost all of its
\npoorest citizens.<\/p>\n

\nThe first phase of the program, called “The National
\nPhotovoltaic Household Electrification Program” was initiated
\non Monday (July 8) in the Contumaza province, where 1,601 solar
\npanels were installed. These installations will power 126
\nimpoverished communities in the districts of Cupisnique, San Benito,
\nTantarica, Chilete, Yonan, San Luis, and Contai.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\npopulation to have electricity. That means only 5% of the country’s

\nSure, Peru, almost due south of here and closer to the other side
\nof the equator, has somewhat more sunshine than we do.
\nBut Peru’s plan to provide affordable solar electricity to its
\npoorer areas could also work right here in Georgia.<\/p>\n

\nThrough a program of rural electrification, the rate of
\nelectrification in the Cajamarca Region has gone from 48% of
\nhouseholds to 60% in just one year.\n<\/p>\n

\nMinister Merino notes that the installation of PV modules is faster
\nthan grid extension, and that when families have electricity in
\ntheir homes, it allows children more time to study.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nFaster than grid extension, and if you’ve already got a grid,
\nlike we do here in Georgia,
\ninstalling distributed solar power is way faster than building a new nuke.\n<\/p>\n

\nMeanwhile, in the United States, Americans for Prosperity — a
\npolitical lobbying group founded by billionaire fossil fuel
\nindustrialists Charles and David Koch — is currently lobbying
\nthe Georgia state legislature to reject a plan requiring Georgia
\nPower, one of the largest energy utilities in the American
\nSoutheast, to buy more solar energy.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nWhile Georgia Power is always also lobbying the leg., in context
\npresumably Lieber was referring to the IRP before the GA PSC.
\nWhile the total of around 1,000 MW by 2016 the PSC required
\nis a big step forward, it’s still only the amount
\n
\nNew Jersey already has installed right now<\/a>.
\nStill, Georgia Power lost its traditional grip on the PSC,
\neven with the assistance of astroturf from the Koch brothers.
\nAnd that’s big news!\n<\/p>\n
