\r\nHow does\r\n\r\nAT&T’s new local 4G LTE coverage<\/a> compare to Sprint’s?\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n\"AT&T<\/a>\r\nand still rolling more out, said\r\nTony Adams in the Ledger-Inquirer,\r\n\r\nUpdate: AT&T adds cell sites outside Columbus, launches yearly smartphone upgrade plan July 26<\/a>,\r\n

\r\n

\r\nAT&T has 4G in the Columbus market, but not the faster LTE. A check\r\nof the firm’s coverage map shows virtually every other major metro\r\narea in Georgia with LTE, while many smaller communities in the\r\nstate also have the top-of-the-line service.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nElsas, in a statement, said the company uses HSPA+ technology\r\nlocally and those 4G speeds “are incredibly fast — up to\r\nfour times faster than 3G.” But she also acknowledged there is\r\nwork to be done on adding spectrum, or capacity, to the Columbus\r\nnetwork.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n\"Verizon<\/a>\r\n“As far as LTE, there is currently a lack of available\r\nspectrum in Columbus, and we are working hard to address\r\nthis,” the statement said. “In the meantime,\r\n\r\n\"Verizon<\/a>\r\n we continue\r\nto invest in technology, strengthen our network and seek\r\nopportunities to offer the best wireless experience possible in the\r\nregion.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\n“Possible” of course includes they can milk profits out of it.\r\nI’ve got no objection to a business making a profit, but the incumbents have been\r\nholding back U.S. Internet access speeds for a decade or more because they could\r\nroll in the dough from what they already had out there, and I’m more than a little\r\nsceptical that that philosophy has changed at T or VZ.\r\nAlthough the fear of\r\n\r\nbeing outflanked by Sprint<\/a>\r\nmay have something to do with these recent rollouts.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\nThe company has said it now has 4G LTE in 328 markets, serving 225\r\nmillion people. It expects to complete a nationwide rollout of LTE\r\nby the end of 2014. Nearly 90 percent should be up and running by\r\nthe end of this year, however. AT&T has invested $3.9 billion in\r\nGeorgia since 2010.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“We are certainly not finished here in Georgia, and we value\r\nand appreciate our Columbus-area customers’ understanding and\r\nsupport as we work hard to make the necessary improvements they\r\nexpect and deserve,” the statement from Elsas said.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nEventually, but don’t hold your breath.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nAT&T says it’s still on track to cover 300 million people in the\r\nUnited States by the end of 2014 but that more than 200 million\r\npeople already have access to 4G LTE. The carrier’s network was\r\nrecently dubbed the\r\n\r\nfastest in the United States by PCMag<\/a>, though\r\nVerizon currently offers a more expansive network.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nNationwide, Verizon Wireless’ LTE network covers 298 million people\r\nin 500 markets.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nHm, so VZ has already done what T promises to do by next year.\r\nAnd Verizon’s local coverage is still much broader.\r\n
