\r\nThe local newspaper didn’t look past PG&E’s news about unit 2 coming back up (lightning strike)\r\nto notice that unit 1 had been down (pipe leak) a few weeks before.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nUnit 2 at\r\n\r\nDiablo Canyon<\/a> nuclear power plant returned to full power\r\nTuesday after the unit unexpectedly\r\n\r\nshut down July 10<\/a> when an\r\nelectrical disturbance occurred in equipment that supports moving\r\npower to the state’s electric grid.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nAn investigation into the shutdown determined the electrical\r\ndisturbance was a result of a flashover event on a lightning\r\narrestor located on the non-nuclear side of the plant, Pacific Gas\r\nand Electric Co. said in a news release.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe flashover occurred during routine maintenance that involved\r\npressure washing, known as “hot washing,” of electrical\r\ninsulators near the lightning arrestor. Upon sensing the\r\ndisturbance, the unit performed as designed and automatically went\r\noff line to protect equipment. Unit 1 was unaffected and continued\r\nto generate power.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nOne of Diablo Canyon Power Plant’s reactors, shut down June 26\r\nbecause of a minor safety concern, was brought back online July 4,\r\naccording to PG&E.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nA minor leakage found on a section of pipe inside the containment\r\nbuilding for Unit 1 was the reason for the June shutdown. The leak\r\nwas found on a pipe that is part of the Residual Heat Removal\r\nSystem, which helps cool the reactor once it has been shut down.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nUnit 1 started providing power to the state’s grid July 1 before it\r\ntransitioned to full capacity July 4.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nDuring the repairs, Unit 2 was online and providing power to the\r\ngrid as usual.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n
