{"id":468,"date":"2012-09-26T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-09-26T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/09\/walton-family-foundation-granted-105-million-towards-ga-charter-schools-in-2011.html"},"modified":"2012-09-26T08:00:00","modified_gmt":"2012-09-26T12:00:00","slug":"walton-family-foundation-granted-105-million-towards-ga-charter-schools-in-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/09\/walton-family-foundation-granted-105-million-towards-ga-charter-schools-in-2011.html","title":{"rendered":"Walton Family Foundation granted $1.05 million towards GA charter schools in 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nThe total amount of Walton family affiliate money backing the Georgia\ncharter school referendum is far larger than\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/09\/outside-money-fueling-charter-school-amendment-referendum.html\">\nAlice Walton&#8217;s $250,000.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIn the Walton Family Foundation&#8217;s list of\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.waltonfamilyfoundation.org\/2011-education-reform-grant-list\">\n2011 Education Reform Grants<\/a>,\nthere are two Georgia organizations:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.waltonfamilyfoundation.org\/mediacenter\/walton-family-foundation-invests-$159-million-in-k12-education-reform-in-2011\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017ee3bfea46970d\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017ee3bfea46970d-pi.png\"    \/><\/a>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr valign=\"top\">\n<td>\nGeorgia Charter Schools Association Inc. <\/td>\n<td>700,000\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr valign=\"top\">\n<td>\nGeorgia Family Education and Research Council, Inc. <\/td>\n<td>350,000\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nGCSA has\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/09\/charter-school-bait-and-switch.html\">\nmade the news<\/a> quite a bit lately,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gacharters.org\/\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017ee3bfea49970d\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017ee3bfea49970d-pi.jpg\"    \/><\/a>\nand its name makes its purpose pretty clear.\nAccording to\n<a href=\"http:\/\/persweb.connect2amc.com\/nacsa\/MEMBERDIRECTORY\/MemberDirectoryResults\/tabid\/185\/Default.aspx?scid=7lc%2B%2FehuXzV0m9SwLoSlOQ%3D%3D&amp;mcid=3bw5Iw8nJ5%2FFCZM%2B3RG2QQ%3D%3D\">\nthe National Association of Charter School Authorizers (NACSA),<\/a>\nGCSA is a NACSA member.\nYou remember NACSA,\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/08\/alec-behind-georgia-charter-school-referendum.html\">\nthe organization that Zaid Jilani\ndiscovered was an ALEC member, and that bailed out of\nALEC two days later.<\/a>\nThat was in May 2012, <em>after<\/em> the Georgia legislature\npassed the bill putting the charter school referendum on the ballot.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nGeorgia Family Education and Research Council, Inc. (GFERC)\nis slightly less obvious. According\n\n<!--more-->\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiafamily.org\/resources\/gfc-bulletin\/1023-legislature-passes-charter-school-constitutional-amendment\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017ee3bfea4c970d\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017ee3bfea4c970d-pi.jpg\"    \/><\/a>\nto\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.manta.com\/c\/mmcbp9y\/georgia-family-council\">\nManta.com<\/a>\nGFERC has apparently shortened its name to Georgia Family Council.\nGFC&#8217;s website includes this item from 20 March 2012\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiafamily.org\/resources\/gfc-bulletin\/1023-legislature-passes-charter-school-constitutional-amendment\">\nLegislature Passes Charter School Constitutional Amendment!<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nThanks to everyone who supported this important school choice effort\nby contacting their legislators, rallying at the Capitol, and\nvisiting their legislators.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nThat makes GFC&#8217;s position pretty clear.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSo the total invested by Walton family affiliates in organizations\nthat are backing the charter school amendment is apparently\nat least\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/09\/outside-money-fueling-charter-school-amendment-referendum.html\">\nAlice Walton&#8217;s $250,000<\/a>\nplus the Walton Family Foundation&#8217;s $700,000 to GCSA\nand $350,000 to the Georgia Family Council,\nfor at least $1.3 million.\nAt least, because there may be others in that Walton Family Foundation\nlist that don&#8217;t have Georgia in their name.\nThat&#8217;s at least $1.3 million towards letting an unappointed\nboard in Atlanta privatize our public schools\nand\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/09\/public-schools-to-be-treated-less-favorably-than-charter-schools.html\">\nspend our local tax dollars<\/a>\nto pay\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/08\/georgia-would-send-much-more-money-per-student-to-charter-schools-than-to-public-schools.html\">\nmore per student to charter schools than to public schools.<\/a>\nWith much of that $1.3 million\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/09\/no-other-state-has-had-a-positive-outcome-for-a-charter-positive-ballot-initiative-former-t-splost-proponents-now-pushing-c.html\">\nin the hands of many of the same people who pushed the T-SPLOST tax\non the July primary ballot.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWho would you rather have controling your public school tax dollars:\nWal-Mart heirs, or your local school boards?\nVote No on the charter school amendment in November.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The total amount of Walton family affiliate money backing the Georgia charter school referendum is far larger than Alice Walton&#8217;s $250,000.
