\r\nA political group founded by billionaire brothers Charles and David\r\nKoch wants Georgia’s utility regulators to reject a plan requiring\r\nSouthern Co. to buy more solar energy, but an Associated Press\r\nreview finds it has used misleading figures to build its case.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe Georgia chapter of Americans For Prosperity, founded by\r\nbillionaire brothers Charles and David Koch, wants Georgia’s utility\r\nregulators to reject a solar energy plan in Georgia. But an\r\nAssociated Press review ahead of a vote on the issue finds that it\r\nhas used misleading figures to build its case.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe Georgia chapter of Americans For Prosperity has said in mass\r\ne-mails that a proposal requiring Southern Co. subsidiary Georgia\r\nPower to buy more solar energy could raise energy bills by 40\r\npercent. A review shows the claim is misleading, and there’s a\r\ndebate over how much solar energy might cost. Georgia’s Public\r\nService Commission will meet next week to vote on the utility’s plan\r\nfor meeting Georgia’s energy needs for the next two decades. Georgia\r\nPower has already agreed to add 270 megawatts of solar energy to its\r\nsystem and did not propose adding more in its latest plan.\r\nCommissioner Lauren “Bubba” McDonald Jr. wants a vote on\r\na plan requiring Georgia Power to add an additional 525 megawatts of\r\nsolar energy.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nMcDonald’s plan has support from a group of solar developers earlier\r\nspurned by Georgia Power.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“It’s an opportunity for the consumers,” McDonald said.\r\n“It’s an opportunity to utilize what God has given us, and\r\nthat’s the sun.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n
