A national consortium of state politicians and powerful<br \/>\ncorporations, ALEC presents itself as a \u201cnonpartisan<br \/>\npublic-private partnership\u201d. But behind that mantra lies a<br \/>\nvast network of corporate lobbying and political action aimed to<br \/>\nincrease corporate profits at public expense without public<br \/>\nknowledge.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nHe said more<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/bill-moyers\/alec-the-scheme-to-remake_b_1916171.html\"><br \/>\non Huffington Post Wednesday,<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nIn state houses around the country, hundreds of pieces of<br \/>\nboilerplate ALEC legislation are proposed or enacted that would,<br \/>\namong other things, dilute collective bargaining rights, make it<br \/>\nharder for some Americans to vote, and limit corporate liability for<br \/>\nharm caused to consumers \u2014 each accomplished without the<br \/>\npublic ever knowing who&#8217;s behind it.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWe explore ALEC&#8217;s self-serving machine at work, acting in a way one<br \/>\nWisconsin politician describes as &#8220;a corporate dating service for<br \/>\nlonely legislators and corporate special interests.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nLocally, we&#8217;ve already found ALEC squirming around under the rocks of<br \/>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/08\/alec-private-prisons-fossil-fuels-and-charter-schools.html\"><br \/>\nprivate prisons, stand-your-ground laws, opposition to renewable energy,<\/a> and<br \/>\n<\/a><a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/09\/q-why-are-so-many-states-pushing-charter-schools-now-a-alec.html\"><br \/>\nthe charter school referendum on the November ballot<br \/>\nthat would let an unelected board in Atlanta force charter<br \/>\nschools on local communities that would have no control over them<br \/>\nyet would have to pay extra for them from local sales and property taxes.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bill Moyers takes on ALEC.
