\nThis week, Moyers & Company (check local listings) presents\n\n<\/a>\n\u201cUnited States of ALEC,\u201d a report on the most\ninfluential corporate-funded political force most of America has\nnever heard of \u2014 ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange\nCouncil. A national consortium of state politicians and powerful\ncorporations, ALEC presents itself as a \u201cnonpartisan\npublic-private partnership\u201d. But behind that mantra lies a\nvast network of corporate lobbying and political action aimed to\nincrease corporate profits at public expense without public\nknowledge.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nIn state houses around the country, hundreds of pieces of\nboilerplate ALEC legislation are proposed or enacted that would,\namong other things, dilute collective bargaining rights, make it\nharder for some Americans to vote, and limit corporate liability for\nharm caused to consumers \u2014 each accomplished without the\npublic ever knowing who’s behind it.\n<\/p>\n

\nWe explore ALEC’s self-serving machine at work, acting in a way one\nWisconsin politician describes as “a corporate dating service for\nlonely legislators and corporate special interests.”\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nLocally, we’ve already found ALEC squirming around under the rocks of\n\nprivate prisons, stand-your-ground laws, opposition to renewable energy,<\/a> and\n<\/a>\nthe charter school referendum on the November ballot\nthat would let an unelected board in Atlanta force charter\nschools on local communities that would have no control over them\nyet would have to pay extra for them from local sales and property taxes.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n
