{"id":4577,"date":"2013-07-07T12:05:48","date_gmt":"2013-07-07T16:05:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/?p=4577"},"modified":"2013-07-07T12:30:16","modified_gmt":"2013-07-07T16:30:16","slug":"re-evaluate-plant-vogtle-and-move-to-wind-and-solar-power-courtney-hanson-ga-psc-2013-06-18","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/re-evaluate-plant-vogtle-and-move-to-wind-and-solar-power-courtney-hanson-ga-psc-2013-06-18.html","title":{"rendered":"Re-evaluate Plant Vogtle and move to wind and solar power &#8211;Courtney Hanson @ GA PSC 2013-06-18"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\r\nRe-evaluate Plant Vogtle, especially its water use,\r\nand move to efficiency, wind, and solar power instead,\r\nsaid\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Pw6VsxJVgMU&#038;list=PLshUv86fYkiFU0cmuLEetkftFsBG2DQkV\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.ytimg.com\/vi\/Pw6VsxJVgMU\/default.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nCourtney Hanson of\r\nGeorgia Women&#8217;s Action for New Directions (GA WAND)\r\nat\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/06\/videos-of-ga-psc-on-georgia-power-coal-plant-closings-ga-psc-2013-06-18.html\">\r\nthe Georgia Public Service Commission meeting Tuesday 18 June 2013<\/a>.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nShe reminded GA PSC Plant Vogtle 3 and 4 are late and over budget, and then:\r\n<blockquote>\r\n\r\nI want to add my voice to the chorus of folks here who are concerned\r\nabout water issues.\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/08\/plant-vogtle-water-use.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;width:287px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b01761718765e970c-pi.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nWe know that Vogtle 3 and 4 will require an additional withdrawal\r\nof as much as 74 million gallons a day from the Savannah River and\r\nmost of that water will not be returned.\r\nWe know that the central Savannah River \r\narea where Vogtle is located is already\r\nvery prone to droughts\r\nand the plant has been close to shutting down several times\r\ndue to drought conditions.\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/08\/plant-vogtle-water-use.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017617187696970c-pi.gif\"><\/a>\r\nGeorgia is also already struggling to supply enough water\r\nfor our homes, businesses, industries, and farms.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nIn addition, the Savannah River is <!--more-->the fourth most polluted\r\nriver in the country.\r\nJust in the central Savannah River region alone\r\nthere are several chemical plants\r\nthat are polluting the river near Vogtle.\r\nThat is a big deal because as low flow rates become more of an issue\r\nit&#8217;s increasing the concentrations of those contaminants\r\nthat are running the risk of damaging the intake equipment on Plant Vogtle.\r\nAnd of course this is a safety issue and also a money issue,\r\ncosting more to maintain\r\nthe project which is already over budget.\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/savannahnow.com\/news\/2009-10-22\/savannah-river-fourth-most-polluted-nation#.UdmPcsWm1-w\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/sav-cdn.com\/sites\/default\/files\/imagecache\/story_slideshow_thumb\/editorial\/images\/savannah\/mdControlled\/cms\/2009\/10\/21\/507552235.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nSo with the water permits not even having been granted for Vogtle 3 and 4,\r\nnow is really the time to look forward, to do the right thing\r\nto protect our communities,\r\nto protect our water sources,\r\nto protect our pocket books,\r\nand to pursue energy efficiency, wind, and solar,\r\nrather than the completion of Plant Vogtle 3 and 4.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nHere&#8217;s\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Pw6VsxJVgMU&#038;list=PLshUv86fYkiFU0cmuLEetkftFsBG2DQkV\">\r\nthe video:<\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align:center;font-size:80%\">\r\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Pw6VsxJVgMU\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\r\n<br>\r\nRe-evaluate Plant Vogtle and move to wind and solar power &#8211;Courtney Hanson\r\n<br>\r\nGeorgia Power proposed closing of coal plants,\r\n<br>\r\nAdministrative Session, GA Public Service Commission (GA PSC),\r\n<br>Doug Everrett (1: south Georgia), Tim Echols (2: east Georgia), Chairman Chuck Eaton (3: metro Atlanta), Stan Wise (5 north Georgia), Bubba McDonald (4: west Georgia),\r\n<br>\r\nVideo by John S.
