\r\nWe don’t know\r\n\r\nthe federal cost estimates<\/a> or the \r\n\r\nterms and conditions<\/a>\r\nor why Plant Vogtle just got another three month extension\r\non that $8.33 billion federal loan guarantee.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe owners of Plant Vogtle have secured — for the third time\r\n— an extension to allow further negotiation with the U.S.\r\nEnergy Department over its 2010 offer of up to $8.3 billion in\r\nfederal loan guarantees to help finance two new nuclear reactors.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nGeorgia Power and co-owners Oglethorpe Power and Municipal Electric\r\nAuthority of Georgia were conditionally approved in February 2010\r\nfor loan-guarantee financing, in which the government promises to\r\nassume a company’s debt if the company defaults. However, the\r\ndetails were never agreed on. Two extensions have since expired,\r\nwith the most recent deadline — June 30 — passing\r\nwithout any formal agreement in place. Jeannice M.W. Hall, a\r\nSouthern Co. spokeswoman, said in an e-mail Wednesday that the new\r\nextension sets a Sept. 30 deadline for completing the loan guarantee\r\narrangements.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nWith Southern Company’s stock already\r\n\r\ndowngraded because of Kemper Coal and Plant Vogtle<\/a>,\r\nafter\r\n\r\nS&P’s downgraded SO’s credit<\/a>,\r\nand with\r\n\r\nstill more cost overruns at Kemper<\/a>\r\non top of\r\n\r\nVogtle being 19 months late and a billion dollars over budget<\/a>,\r\nas \r\nGloria Tatum asked back in May<\/a>,\r\nwhy is SO gambling on nuclear instead of solar?\r\n

\r\nIf you’re tired of this, you can\r\n\r\nask DoE Secretary Ernest Moniz to revoke that loan<\/a>.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
