The request is being made to allow the\r\ncompany to recover the costs of recent and future investments in\r\ninfrastructure &mdash;including environmental controls, transmission\r\nand distribution, generation, and smart grid technologies &mdash;\r\nrequired in order to maintain high levels of reliability and\r\nsuperior customer service.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nThe proposed change in rates would be effective Jan. 1, 2014.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nWhat a coincidence!\r\nOne year to the month after\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/11\/georgia-power-raising-rates.html\">\r\nthe last rate hike<\/a>.\r\nOnce again\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/10\/georgia-power-hikes-prices-for-gas-and-nuclear-then-complains-about-solar.html\">\r\nblaming &#8220;smart grid technologies, environmental controls&#8221;<\/a>, etc.\r\nMuch more likely, this has to do with\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/southern-company-downgraded-because-of-coal-and-nukes-two-analysts.html\">\r\nthe recent downgrades of Georgia Power&#8217;s parent the Southern Company<\/a>,\r\nand those were for coal and nukes.\r\nAs Adam Smith said two centuries ago,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/utilities-levy-an-absurd-tax-upon-the-rest-of-their-fellow-citizens-mdashadam-smith.html\">&#8220;utilities levy an absurd tax upon the rest of their fellow citizens&#8221;<\/a>.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s the annual Georgia Power rate hike, blaming everything except coal and nukes.
