Times&#8217; online poll is currently running 92% yes on\r\n&#8220;Is distributed generation the future of electric grids?&#8221;\r\nAnd Los Angeles is doing something about distributed rooftop solar power.\r\nSomething we could be doing right here in south Georgia.\r\nIf Georgia Power won&#8217;t do it, local governments could.\r\nAfter all, if the Industrial Authority can float bonds to buy\r\nland for business parks that sit vacant, it could float bonds\r\nto fund rooftop solar.\r\nOr maybe sell some of that land to pay for solar.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nJohn Upton wrote for grist 27 June 2013,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/grist.org\/news\/l-a-launches-nations-largest-solar-rooftop-program\/?utm_source=facebook&#038;utm_medium=update&#038;utm_campaign=socialflow\">\r\nL.A. launches nation\u2019s largest solar rooftop program<\/a>,\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/labusinesscouncil.org\/category\/initiatives\/\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;width:313px;\" src=\"http:\/\/labusinesscouncil.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/initiatives.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nThe first small shoots of what will grow into a sprawling solar\r\npower plant have sprouted in Los Angeles.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nL.A.&#8217;s Department of Water and Power is rolling out the country&#8217;s\r\nbiggest urban rooftop program, which will pay residents for solar\r\nenergy they produce in excess of their own needs. That will give\r\nresidents a reason to install more solar capacity on their roofs\r\nthan they can use in their homes.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\nAccording to \r\nCatherine Green in the L.A. Times yesterday,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/la-fi-solar-buyback-20130627,0,4976105.story\">\r\nL.A. program lets DWP pay customers to generate solar power:\r\nClean L.A. Solar&#8217;s goal is to add 150 megawatts, or enough to power 30,000 homes, to the city grids.<\/a><!--more-->\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nCalled Clean L.A. Solar, the program allows the Los Angeles\r\nDepartment of Water and Power to pay customers to generate solar\r\npower across the city&#8217;s vast expanse of flat roof space.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nThe goal of the effort, the brainchild of the Los Angeles Business\r\nCouncil, is to generate 150 megawatts of solar electricity, or\r\nenough to power about 30,000 homes. The council hopes to attract\r\ninvestments totaling $500 million from a growing list of companies\r\nthat want to invest in L.A.&#8217;s push to go green by setting up large\r\nclusters of rooftop solar panels.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nHere&#8217;s the L.A. Business Council&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/labusinesscouncil.org\/category\/initiatives\/\">CLEAN LA Solar Program Spring 2013 Update<\/a>,\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<strong>Economic impact:<\/strong>\r\nIt is estimated that the full 150-megawatt program will produce 4,300\r\njobs over the next several years and garner over $500 million worth of\r\nprivate investment.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nHm, maybe we could use something like that around here&#8230;.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The L.A.
