\r\nThree unscheduled candidates for the Lowndes County Library Board\r\nset examples for informative applications to an appointed board.\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nAt the\r\n\r\n10 June 2013 Work Session<\/a>\r\nthe Chairman did clearly say library board appointments were not on the agenda\r\nbut would be at their next meeting.\r\nHe didn’t define “next meeting”, but he meant two weeks later,\r\nwhen it is indeed\r\n\r\non the agenda<\/a> for this morning and tomorrow evening.\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nBack two weeks ago,\r\n\r\nSouth Georgia Regional Library Director Kelly Lenz<\/a>\r\nsaid two nominees were present for two vacant positions.\r\nThen she named three people: Jack Hartley, Linda Most, and Matt Lawrence.\r\n

\r\nJack Hartley’s\r\n\r\nLinkedIn profile<\/a>\r\nsays he is “Franchsie Owner of Home Instead Senior Care, Valdosta, Georgia”.\r\nHe said:\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nI’ve been a business owner here in Lowndes County for seventeen years,\r\nowner of U.S. Photo, and also of a company called Home Instead Senior Care.\r\nI’d be happy to serve on the board, I have quite a bit of extensive\r\nsales, marketing, and management experience, I think I’d bring that to the\r\nboard, and I’d be a real good player.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nCommissioners had no questions for Hartley.\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nLinda Most said:\r\n

\r\nI’m\r\n\r\nan assistant professor of library and information studies at VSU<\/a>.\r\nI moved to Valdosta to take the position and it will be here five years.\r\nI’m an experienced public librarian.\r\nBefore I went back to get my graduate degree and earn my PhD,\r\nI worked as a public librarian in Beech County, Florida and Baltimore, Maryland,\r\nand my dissertation research was on the role of rural public libraries\r\nas important community places.\r\nI think SGRL is a very important institution to this county\r\nand I would like very much to be\r\ninvolved in seeing it prosper.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nCommissioners had no questions for Most.\r\n

\r\nMatt Lawrence said:\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nI’m\r\n\r\na lawyer here in town<\/a>.\r\nAnd I will not try to give advice to the library board.\r\nTwo reasons that I would like to serve.\r\n

\r\nFirst of all is just a very simple one. \r\nMy family’s been here since there’s been a town here,\r\nand I think it is incumbent upon people who are nurtured\r\nby a community to give back to the community.\r\nI feel like I need to serve in some capacity and I would be glad to do that.\r\n

\r\nBut the second reason… I think that\r\nin an era where each of you have computers and all in front of you\r\nthese technological gadgets which they’re all nice; they help us in a lot of ways\r\nit is extraordinarily important\r\nto be able to sit down and read through and comprehend it and understand it\r\nand to have the way that we think shaped by what we use as tools to learn.\r\nAnd our culture and our western civilization \r\nsince the printing press was invented has been developed and created\r\nby the written word.\r\nAnd I think that it is very important\r\nthat we should encourage children\r\nnot only drudge through what they\r\nhave to drudge through in school, but to\r\ninculcate in them\r\na desire and a love of reading for its own sake,\r\nand pursuing knowledge for its own sake.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nCommissioners had no questions for Lawrence.\r\n
