\n“fabricated” reports that “very seriously underestimated the costs of” a potential serious nuclear accident in France.
\nThe real cost would range from 0.76 trillion to 5.8 trillion euros ($1 trillion to $7.62 trillion dollars).
\nFor comparison,
\nthe Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of France is about 2.11 trillion euros,
\naccording to the World Bank.
\nSo a Chernobyl- or Fukushima-style accident in France
\nwould cost ⅓ to 2¾ times French GDP.
\nNo country can afford that.\n<\/p>\n

\nNot even the U.S., whose GDP is $14.99 trillion or $11.41 euros,
\nso such an accident, esp. if it happened in the densely populated eastern U.S.,
\nas for example in Maryland, could cost half the GDP of the United States.
\nThat’s way beyond the
\n
\n$68 billion cost of Hurricane Sandy or $125 billion for Hurricane Katrina<\/a>.
\nOne nuclear accident could cost more than twice the
\n
\n$4 to $6 trillion for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n

\ndesigned to counter the reports that EDF had fabricated, which

\nin an area the size of France and Germany combined, on top of
\nevacuating 5 million people and affecting 90 million people.
\nThe evacuation zone alone would be the size of the French regions Aquitaine
\nand Mid-Pyrenees combined.
\nEvacuation, housing, and decontamination of soil and waste could cost
\n475 billion euros.

\nThe contamination zone would have a good chance of reaching Berlin.
\nWhat about Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Oslo?
\nWhere’s the scenario for Cattenom?\n<\/p>\n

\nAnd why would we want EDF building nukes in the U.S.?
