\r\nState lawmakers who embraced private prisons as a cost-cutting\r\nmeasure are starting to have trouble ignoring their abysmal\r\nconditions. Corrections Corporation of America, the largest and most\r\npowerful private prison company in the nation, lost four prison\r\ncontracts in the past month after extensive reports of abuse,\r\nneglect, and even fraud within their operations.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nIdaho cut ties with the corporation on Wednesday, which turned the\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nstate’s largest prison into a violent hellhole inmates called\r\n“Gladiator School.” Earlier this year, CCA was caught\r\nunderstaffing the prison and using prison gangs to control the\r\npopulation. The company admitted to falsifying nearly 4,800 hours of\r\nstaffing records to squeeze more money out of the state for\r\nnonexistent security work. Shift logs at the prison showed the same\r\nsecurity guards working for 2 to 3 days at a time without breaks.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nLast week, Texas closed two CCA prisons, including one with a\r\nhistory of suspicious prisoner deaths. One lawsuit alleges prison\r\nstaff ignored an inmate’s cries for medical assistance, forcing her\r\nto give birth in a prison toilet to a baby that died four days\r\nlater.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nCCA was also booted from Mississippi earlier this month after\r\nmultiple deadly riots over poor food and sanitation, lack of medical\r\ncare, and mistreatment by guards. Mississippi is hiring another\r\nprivate prison company, MTC, to take over CCA’s contract —\r\neven though MTC runs another prison with the highest inmate assault\r\nrate in the state. Mississippi already terminated contracts with the\r\nother major private prison company, GEO Group, after it was found\r\nguilty of turning a juvenile facility into “a cesspool of\r\nunconstitutional and inhuman acts.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n
