The company is seeking\r\npermission to close 15 coal-fired generators across the state or to\r\nconvert them to natural gas, which would remove 2,100 megawatts of\r\ngenerating capacity, roughly equal to the amount that will come on\r\nline in 2017 with the addition of two nuclear reactors at Plant\r\nVogtle near Waynesboro. The company would still have a 25 percent\r\nexcess as reserve.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nCommissioner Lauren &ldquo;Bubba&rdquo; McDonald has said he wants\r\nthe long-range plan to effectively double Georgia Power&#8217;s solar\r\ncapacity, which is currently planned to total 271 megawatts.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nAs the story also notes, Commissioner Stan Wise asked many questions\r\nabout excess capacity, and it seemed to me their purpose was to get\r\nGeorgia Power to say that solar would put people out of jobs.\r\nThe JAX story concludes the assembled four Georgia Power executives\r\nsaid it would raise rates.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nI took video, so we shall see what they actually said.\r\nIf they said that, they&#8217;re wrong, or at least they would be wrong\r\nif Georgia Power would stop pretending there are no\r\ndisruptive distributed solar power icebergs in front of their Titanic\r\nand get on with a smart grid to turn solar into a source of profit\r\nfor their company and lower bills for their customers.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nBut the GA Power execs certainly did say they had quite a bit of\r\nexcess capacity, about 25%.\r\nMore on that later, too.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Commissioner McDonald wants twice as much solar power from Georgia Power, while Commissioner Stan Wise asked questions leading to Georgia Power maybe saying that would cost more, yesterday at the Georgia Public Service Commission in Atlanta.
