{"id":414,"date":"2012-10-15T14:47:46","date_gmt":"2012-10-15T18:47:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/10\/see-gretchen-quarterman-on-the-radio.html"},"modified":"2012-10-15T14:47:46","modified_gmt":"2012-10-15T18:47:46","slug":"see-gretchen-quarterman-on-the-radio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/10\/see-gretchen-quarterman-on-the-radio.html","title":{"rendered":"See Gretchen Quarterman on the radio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/vVOgvVeGzBc\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017c328c260a970b\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017c328c260a970b-pi.jpg\"  alt=\"Gretchen Quarterman on Chris Beckham's radio show 11 October 2012\"  \/><\/a>\n&#8220;I think people would be more interested in government if they could see it going on,&#8221;\nsaid\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gretchenforlowndes.com\/\">\nGretchen Quarterman,\ncandidate for Chairman of the Lowndes County Commission,<\/a>\non the Chris Beckham drive-time radio show\n11 October 2012,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/valdostatoday.com\/item\/20911.html\">\n105.9, WVGA<\/a>.\nHere&#8217;s\n<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/vVOgvVeGzBc\">\nvideo of that interview,<\/a>\nfollowed by some excerpts.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vVOgvVeGzBc\" width=\"420\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nA few excerpts:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nOur county government does a lot of stuff really great&#8230;\nbut one of the things they don&#8217;t do very well\ndon&#8217;t advertise themselves;\nnot very transparent;\nthey don&#8217;t say what a great job they&#8217;re doing;\nso I thought we could improve in that area.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe County Commission a couple of years ago had\n<a href=\"http:\/\/loco.quarterman.org\/docs\/index.html\">\ntwo different studies commissioned\nabout growth and planning,<\/a> and one of them was&#8230;\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/07\/sprawl-is-not-fiscally-prudent-gretchen-quarterman-lcc-12-july-2011.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017c328c260f970b\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017c328c260f970b-pi.jpg\"  alt=\"Sprawl to ruin, by Prof. Dorfman\"  \/><\/a>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/09\/sprawl-to-ruin-or-dense-with-green-space-for-quality-of-life.html\">\ngrowth close to existing services.<\/a>\nThe county already has an urban service area, like how far the\nwater line goes, how far the sewer line goes.\nAnd that growth should be infilled, and not expand outside of that area,\nbecause that saves resources in terms of how far you have to send the\nsheriff, how far the school bus has to go.\nAnd they also gave an average house price, what it costs in terms of\nproperty taxes to support the services that are sent to them, to a development.\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/07\/sprawl-is-not-fiscally-prudent-gretchen-quarterman-lcc-12-july-2011.html\">\nSo I would say<\/a> close in to existing services is the way to go.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWe need to actively seek out manufacturing jobs,\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nso that we have something that people can do, like\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/12\/mage-solar-cuts-ribbon-in-dublin-georgia.html\">\nDublin, Georgia<\/a> did, and\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2010\/12\/suniva-went-to-solar-valley-michigan-which-has-a-plan.html\">\nNorcross,<\/a>\nwhere they got solar manufacturers to come to their community.\nThey now make something that they send away and they do it over and over.\nWe need to do something like that here.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWe need to expand the hospital, and\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/11\/sgmc-hospital-bonds-go-for-sale-this-week.html\">\nwe&#8217;re doing some of that now.<\/a>\nBut we need to become a health-care destination.\nAnd rather than our citizens going to Gainesville or Columbus\nfor specialized things, we need to have those services here.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAnd with the moving of the library and the auditorium,\nthat does offer the opportunity for the hospital to expand,\nand to partner with VSU and the new healthcare training,\nwe can then train therapists and nurses and become even maybe\na teaching hospital where doctors that are training somewhere\ncould do their internships here; that would be great!\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe most direct thing the County Commission does about that\nis they appoint people to boards and authorities.\nSo they appoint people to the Industrial Authority,\nor to Parks and Recreation.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nParks and Recreation is another place where we&#8217;re bringing\npeople into our community as with\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/02\/im-not-a-director-to-sit-behind-my-desk-and-wait-for-them-to-come-to-us-george-page-of-vlcpra-lcdp-2.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017c328c2612970b\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017c328c2612970b-pi.jpg\"  alt=\"George Page of VLPRA\"  \/><\/a>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/02\/im-not-a-director-to-sit-behind-my-desk-and-wait-for-them-to-come-to-us-george-page-of-vlcpra-lcdp-2.html\">\nbaseball tournaments.<\/a>\nWe could do something similar if we had soccer fields.\nSo if we build some soccer fields and have a soccer tournament,\nwe have great weather here, so we should really be taking\nadvantage of that.\nAnd we&#8217;re TitleTown, so we&#8217;re already sports-focussed, so we can\ndo things like that.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAnd that&#8217;s why we have the distribution centers here,\nbecause we have great access.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIt&#8217;s not really a surprise, but the thing that&#8217;s really enjoyable\nis how nice people are.\nWhen I talk to them they are really so kind, so encouraging,\nso appreciative of the fact that people will run for office.\nThat&#8217;s really wonderful; I like that!\n<\/p>\n<p>\nDemocrats are about making sure that everybody fares equally,\nthat we&#8217;re helping everybody.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIn our community, too, we have the five cities and the county.\nEverybody who lives in the city also lives in the county,\nbut there are who live in the county in the unincorporated areas,\nand we need to really think about our community as a whole.\nHow can we help our whole community.\nHow can we help our metropolitan area, too,\nbecause we work closely with Brooks, and Lanier, and Cook Counties,\nso we have a lot of synergy with them, and we need to think about\nour whole area.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nOne of the things that&#8217;s in my mind lacking right now is the meetings\nare extraordinarily brief and there&#8217;s not a lot of questions\nor discussions in the meeting.\nAnd as chairman I think that people don&#8217;t come to the meeting\nbecause they&#8217;re there for 6 or 8 or 10 minutes and they just feel like that\n&#8220;why should I spend ten minutes when they&#8217;re not even\ngoing to discuss anything&#8221;.\nAnd I think people would be more interested in coming to the meetings\nand in government if they could see it going on.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<em>\nChris Beckham:\nOf course there was a decision made with the trash issue,\nwhich I know you&#8217;ve probably heard a lot about now?\n<\/em>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nNot as much as I would have liked.\nBut I did hear quite a lot about it, yes.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nTrash disposal, that&#8217;s really a safety issue, too, because\nwe don&#8217;t want to have trash piling up on the side of the road,\nor people not disposing correctly of their trash, and it becoming\nunsanitary conditions, and yet we want it to be affordable\nso that people feel like they&#8217;re getting good service for their money.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nUpcoming events mentioned by Chris Beckham:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n8:30-11:30 AM 27 October\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.klvb.net\/news\/upcomingevents.html\">KLVB<\/a>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.klvb.net\/images\/2012_flyer.docx\">\nMake a difference Day<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n8 AM &#8211;
