(aka Nuclear Innovation North America, or NINA)\r\nfor two new reactors at the South Texas Project nuclear facility outside Bay City;\r\nthe same facility where STNP 2\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/01\/fire-in-texas-nuclear-reactor.html\">\r\nhttp:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/01\/fire-in-texas-nuclear-reactor.html<\/a>\r\nhad a fire in January.\r\nThe reason for denial was the same as for EDF and Calvert Cliffs:<!--more-->\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n&ldquo;At this point NINA from our perspective is foreign owned,\r\ncontrolled or dominated,&rdquo; said NRC spokesman Scott Burnell.\r\n&ldquo;Until such time as NINA can come up with a different\r\ncorporate ownership structure we would not be able to approve their\r\nlicense.&rdquo;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nThat was a rather disingenuous statement, considering that\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fukushima_Daiichi_nuclear_disaster\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/7\/7d\/Fukushima_I_by_Digital_Globe.jpg\/260px-Fukushima_I_by_Digital_Globe.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nalready on 11 March 2013, two years to the day after\r\nTEPCO&#8217;s Fukushima disaster, NRC directed staff to start a process that\r\ncould change those foreign ownership rules.\r\nTEPCO pull out of STNP after Fukushima, and NRG supposedly cancelled\r\nthe project, but apparently NRG later went in with Toshiba to do it anyway.\r\nAnd now NRC proposes to change the rules to let that happen.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nSTNP 3 and 4 are, like Calvert Cliffs 3,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/06\/more-new-nukes-to-stop-vogtle-summer-and-15-more.html\">\r\nstill marked as &#8220;Under Review&#8221; instead of &#8220;Suspended&#8221; in\r\nNRC&#8217;s\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrc.gov\/reactors\/new-reactors\/col.html\">\r\nCombined License Applications for New Reactors<\/a>.\r\nSomebody remind me why the NRC bothers having a program for\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrc.gov\/reactors\/new-reactors\/oversight.html\">\r\nRegulatory Oversight for New Reactors<\/a>?\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/06\/nrc-to-change-nuke-foreign-ownership-so-edf-can-fire-up-calvert-cliffs.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;width:240px\" src=\"https:\/\/fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net\/hphotos-ak-ash3\/558123_564192320259641_513433783_n.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nAnyway, you can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/06\/nrc-to-change-nuke-foreign-ownership-so-edf-can-fire-up-calvert-cliffs.html\">comment online until 2 August or in person in Maryland 19 June 2013<\/a>.\r\nPublic comment (and lawsuits) by organizations and individuals\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/06\/san-onofre-nuke-closing-for-good-socal-edison.html\">\r\neventually got SoCal Edison to close San Onofre for good<\/a>,\r\nso it could do the same for Calvert Cliffs and STNP.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>PS: Owed to Kay Patrick.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Not just EDF and Calvert Cliffs that would be enabled by the current NRC rule-changing comment period.
