\nAs its closing argument for SPLOST VII,\n\n\"library<\/a>\nthe VDT argued that the library has bees in its brick walls.\nSure and we need a new library.\nBut they didn’t address any of the questions about the Five Points\nout-of-state architect plan for a new library\nor about\n\nthe process by which that plan was produced.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\nPlainly speaking, the South Georgia Regional Library is in bad\nshape. Half of the red-brick building was constructed in 1966, and\nthe other in 1995.\n<\/p>\n

\nWalking in, the atmosphere seems stuffy and archaic \u2014 stained\nceiling tiles and old carpet, color-neutral walls and little\ndecoration.\n<\/p>\n

\nThe wiring intended to service the computers is buried in the floor\nand unable to meet current internet standards, and the\nmachines\u201435 to process 7,000 logins a month\u2014are all\nclustered together in one area.\n<\/p>\n

\nThe HVAC system is antiquated, riddled with patches and still slowly\ndisintegrating, and replacement of the system would cost upward of\n$2 million.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nThis and their other points are all true, and although I haven’t seen them,\nI have no doubt this is true, too:\n<\/p>\n\n\n

\nTo reiterate: there are honeybees living in the brick walls of the library.\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nBut this article doesn’t even bring in the advantages to the community in\n\nselling the current library lot to SGMC so the hospital can expand.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\nMe, I plan to vote for SPLOST VII.\nBut if an emotional appeal with no explanation of the new library plan\nand not even much explanation of why a public library is a public good\n(you don’t have to sell me on that, but apparently some people around here\ndon’t get that) is the best the VDT can do to sell the library plan in SPLOST VII,\nI won’t be surprised if it loses.\n<\/p>\n

\nAnd this part is only partly true:\n<\/p>\n

\n

\nIf SPLOST doesn’t pass, the library will continue operating as-is:\ninefficiently, using the limited space and aged systems as best as\npossible.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nUntil a new SPLOST VII referendum is proposed next year, perhaps\nwith better explanations of better plans for a library.\n<\/p>\n
