The initiating event was the loss of\r\nthe 1B Start up Transformer which resulted in de-energization of the\r\nB-Train ESF 4KV buses and the 1B and 1C Reactor Coolant Pump Buses.\r\nThe 1B Emergency Diesel Generator auto started and tied to the\r\nB-Train 4KV Emergency buses.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n&#8220;Both MDAFW <!--more-->(Motor Driven Auxiliary Feedwater) Pumps and the TDAFW\r\n(Turbine Driven Auxiliary Feedwater) Pump auto-started and are\r\nsupplying AFW flow to the steam generators. Decay heat removal is\r\nvia the steam dumps to the main condenser.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8220;The cause of the loss of the 1B Start-up Transformer is unknown and\r\nis currently under investigation. All other systems functioned as\r\nexpected in response to the loss of the 1B Start-up Transformer and\r\nreactor trip.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/9026129126\/sizes\/z\/\" title=\"7 years Farley 1 nuclear reactor status percent power\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2818\/9026129126_2ea870c2c9_n.jpg\" alt=\"7 years Farley 1 nuclear reactor status percent power\"><\/a>\r\n&#8220;The NRC Senior Resident Inspector has been notified.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8220;A press release is planned.&#8221;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\nAll control rods fully inserted. There is no impact on Unit 2.\r\nCurrently the licensee does not plan to restart the 1B and 1C\r\nReactor Coolant Pumps. Pressurizer spray has been isolated from the\r\n1B loop per procedure. Main Condenser vacuum is adequate for decay\r\nheat removal.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nThe new Farley Resident Inspector has been that for\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/05\/nuclear-reactor-percent-power-from-nrc-data.html\">92% up<\/a>\r\nBrowns Ferry (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/03\/nuclear-plant-hatch-radioactive-leaks.html\">410 miles from here<\/a>)\r\nand for\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/03\/nuclear-plant-hatch-radioactive-leaks.html\">\r\ntritium-leaking<\/a>\r\nand\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/01\/substandard-fire-protection-at-nuclear-plant-hatch.html\">\r\nquestionable fire safety<\/a>\r\nPlant Hatch (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/03\/nuclear-plant-hatch-radioactive-leaks.html\">100 miles from here<\/a>), too.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nNRC News, 11 June 2013,\r\n<a href=\"pbadupws.nrc.gov\/docs\/ML1316\/ML13162A154.pdf\">\r\nNRC Assigns New Senior Resident Inspector to Farley Nuclear Power Plant<\/a>,\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nThe Nuclear Regulatory Commission has selected Phillip Niebaum as\r\nthe new senior resident inspector at the Farley nuclear power plant\r\nnear Columbia, Ala., about 18 miles east of Dothan. Niebaum joins\r\nJeff Sowa, a second resident inspector at the Farley plant.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nNiebaum joined the NRC in August 2006 as a project engineer in the\r\nResident Inspector Development Program in the Region II office in\r\nAtlanta. He later served as a resident inspector at Southern\r\nNuclear&#8217;s Hatch nuclear power plant near Baxley, in southern\r\nGeorgia. Since 2010, he was one of the resident inspectors at the\r\nTennessee Valley Authority&#8217;s Browns Ferry nuclear power plant near\r\nAthens, Ala.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nBefore joining the agency, he was a reactor operator in the U.S.\r\nNavy, a system engineer at Siemens Westinghouse Power Corp. and was\r\nin the Shift Test Engineer qualification program at Norfolk Naval\r\nShipyard. Niebaum received a Bachelor of Science degree,\r\nspecializing in mechanical engineering, from the University of\r\nCentral Florida in May 2000.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&ldquo;Phil Niebaum has the experience and safety commitment to\r\ncarry out the NRC&#8217;s mission of protecting people and the environment\r\nand to help ensure the safe operation of the Farley plant,&rdquo;\r\nsaid NRC Region II Administrator Victor McCree.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/05\/look-at-southern-companys-safety-performance-so-ceo-fanning.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8543\/8713264771_ea646f9573_m.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nEach U.S. commercial nuclear power plant site has at least two NRC\r\nresident inspectors.
