The far worse outcome for the environment as coal has<br \/>\nfilled energy demand is the story just coming to theatres.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nThe tiny germ of truth in that ten years ago is just plain wrong now<br \/>\nthat coal is not the alternative because<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/03\/already-solar-grid-parity-without-subsidies-in-india-and-italy.html\"><br \/>\nsolar has reached grid parity with nuclear, coal, and natural gas<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe movie plays up Stewart Brand&#8217;s conservationist credentials<br \/>\nand his conversion to pro-nuke.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/04\/nuclear-stewart-brand-vs-renewable-energy-mark-z-jacobson-at-ted.html\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/static2.channels.com\/thumbnails\/assets\/ted-com\/feeds\/96-2144\/197376\/episodes\/10314142_TEDTalks--hd--TEDTalks---Debate--Does-the-world-need-nuclear-energy----Mark-Z--Jacobson-\/-Stewart-Brand--2010---jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\nNot in that movie, but<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/04\/nuclear-stewart-brand-vs-renewable-energy-mark-z-jacobson-at-ted.html\"><br \/>\nin this TED talk<\/a>,<br \/>\nyou can see<br \/>\nStewart Brand lose a debate with Mark Z. Jacobson, who argued<br \/>\nwe can power the whole world with sun, wind, and water.<br \/>\nJacobson&#8217;s summary:<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\n&ldquo;We don&#8217;t need nuclear energy. There&#8217;s plenty of solar and<br \/>\nwind. We can make it reliable. That&#8217;s real data. This is ongoing<br \/>\nresearch. This is not rocket science.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSolving the world&#8217;s can be done if you really put your mind to it<br \/>\nand use clean renewable energy. There&#8217;s absolutely no need for<br \/>\nnuclear power.&rdquo;\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nBrand is also<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gmwatch.org\/latest-listing\/49-2010\/11843\"><br \/>\npro-GMO<\/a> and pro-<a href=\"http:\/\/www.okraparadisefarms.com\/blog\/2010\/07\/deep-till-back-to-the-future-of-plowing.html\">no-till<\/a>,<br \/>\nwhich further reduces his credibility in my mind.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/electric-utiltiies-know-about-moores-law-for-solar-power.html\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;width:224px\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/media\/inline\/blog\/Image\/naam-solar-moore_s-law-1.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\nI read every issue of the seminal magazine Brand started,<br \/>\nWhole Earth Catalog later named CoEvolution Quarterly.<br \/>\nBut, oddly for a biologist,<br \/>\nBrand doesn&#8217;t seem to get exponential growth as in exponentially<br \/>\ndropping solar PV prices leading to exponentially expanding deployment<br \/>\nof solar power, summarized as<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/12\/what-is-moores-law-for-solar-power.html\"><br \/>\nMoore&#8217;s Law for solar<\/a>,<br \/>\nanalogous to the Moore&#8217;s Law that gave us personal computers, the Internet,<br \/>\nand is now driving the mobile communications revolution.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/12\/what-is-moores-law-for-solar-power.html\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;width:250px\" src=\"http:\/\/c1cleantechnicacom.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com\/files\/2011\/06\/solar-power-growing-e1307699928440.png\"><\/a><br \/>\nThe electric utility think tank Edison Electric Institute gets it,<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/solar-could-burn-utility-business-model.html\"><br \/>\nand said in a report in April 2013<\/a><br \/>\nthat  distributed rooftop solar is already dirrupting the traditional<br \/>\nutility baseload business model, based on big nuclear, coal, and natural<br \/>\ngas plants.\n<\/p>\n<p>Some stock traders are starting to get it, as in<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/05\/your-jaw-will-drop-with-astonishment-at-how-fast-solar-power-will-beat-every-other-energy-source-a-stock-trader.html\"><br \/>\n&#8220;your jaw will drop with astonishment&#8221;<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/05\/your-jaw-will-drop-with-astonishment-at-how-fast-solar-power-will-beat-every-other-energy-source-a-stock-trader.html\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8226\/8421700685_a46c93cf27_m.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\nat how fast solar power will beat every other energy source.<br \/>\nAnd that trader&#8217;s projections are extremely conservative.<br \/>\nIf we simply<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/01\/power-source-growth-rates-like-compound-interest.html\"><br \/>\nproject forward the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)&#8217;s<br \/>\nrecent historical figures on annual deployed capacities for each<br \/>\nmajor power source in the U.S.<\/a>,<br \/>\nwe find that solar could well be<br \/>\nthe main source of power within a decade.<br \/>\nWill it really happen that fast?<br \/>\nNobody knows, but as that stock trader wrote:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Basically, people will start begging for Solar power in just a few<br \/>\nyears, because it will be so much cheaper than coal power.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nAnd that&#8217;s already happening.<br \/>\nAccording to<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/01\/overwhelming-majority-of-americans-want-clean-water-and-renewable-energy-poll.html\"><br \/>\na January 2013 national poll<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\n86 percent of Americans want leadership on shifting from coal and<br \/>\nnuclear energy to wind and solar. Support for this approach exists<br \/>\nacross party lines, including 72 percent of Republicans, 83 percent<br \/>\nof Independents, and 97 percent of Democrats.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nPlus Gallup 27 March 2013,<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/161519\/americans-emphasis-solar-wind-natural-gas.aspx\"><br \/>\nAmericans Want More Emphasis on Solar, Wind, Natural Gas<\/a>,\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nNo fewer than two in three Americans want the U.S. to put more<br \/>\nemphasis on producing domestic energy using solar power (76%), wind<br \/>\n(71%), and natural gas (65%). Far fewer want to emphasize the<br \/>\nproduction of oil (46%) and the use of nuclear power (37%). Least<br \/>\nfavored is coal, with about one in three Americans wanting to<br \/>\nprioritize its domestic production.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/01\/carbon-bubble-solar-and-wind-erode-coal-gas-and-biomass-credit-quality-moodys.html\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.carbontracker.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/carbonbubble_report_sm.png\"><\/a><br \/>\nThe only fossil fuel that breaks 50% in that Gallup poll is natural gas,<br \/>\nand as people realize<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/12\/fake-fracking-reports-professor-and-institute-head-quit-other-institute-disbanded.html\"><br \/>\nthe pollution of groundwater<\/a> fracking causes<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/03\/fracking-north-georgia.html\"><br \/>\neverywhere it goes<\/a><br \/>\nand the price of solar PV continues to drop,<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/01\/carbon-bubble-solar-and-wind-erode-coal-gas-and-biomass-credit-quality-moodys.html\"><br \/>\nthe carbon bubble will drop<\/a>.<br \/>\nAnd the only thing less popular than nuclear is coal.<br \/>\nCoal plants are being closed throughout the U.S.,<br \/>\nand even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/05\/china-carbon-cap-and-georgia-power.html\"><br \/>\nChina is proposing a carbon cap<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe movie claims we&#8217;ll always find uses for more energy so we&#8217;ll always need more, but<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/07\/will-electricity-demand-increase.html\"><br \/>\naccording to research last year from Georgia Tech and Duke U.<\/a>,<br \/>\nif we get on with energy efficiency in Georgia,<br \/>\nwe won&#8217;t need either of those new nukes at Plant Vogtle, even without adding solar.<br \/>\nEfficiency and conservation<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/08\/remediating-a-building-in-downtown-valdosta-ron-jackson-of-south-georgia-solar-power.html\"><br \/>\ncan radically reduce costs of operating a building<\/a>.<br \/>\nAs we<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/08\/phase-2-solar-power-for-the-wisenbaker-building-ron-jackson.html\">add solar to efficiency and conservation<\/a>,<br \/>\ntotal power use could well go down, not up.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nEconomics and politics are converging on solar and wind power.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s sad Stewart Brand and the makers of Pandora&#8217;s Promise<br \/>\ndon&#8217;t understand or don&#8217;t present all the evidence,<br \/>\nand it&#8217;s sadder that Brand is being used as a face<br \/>\nfor a pro-nuke movement that is rapidly losing because<br \/>\nreal clean renewable solar and wind power produce jobs, profit,<br \/>\nplenty of clean air and water, and yes, solar and wind<br \/>\nand conservation and efficiency with a smart grid are<br \/>\nthe solution to climate change.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n -jsq<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s a trailer for the &#8220;documentary&#8221; pro-nuke film that comes out today, Pandora&#8217;s Promise.
