Due to the run-away\ncost overruns, the CWIP charge on your\nmonthly bill is already more than three\ntimes what Southern Company confidently\nclaimed it would be at this time\nwhen they presented their case to \u201cyour\u201d\nGeorgia legislature in 2009.\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nAnd that\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/05\/who-voted-for-georgia-powers-nuke-rate-hike-cwip.html\">\n2009 legislature<\/a>\nrubberstamped CWIP so it appears on your Georgia Power bill as\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2011\/10\/calculate-how-much-vogtle-is-costing-you-mandy-hancock.html\">\nNuclear Construction Cost Recovery Rider<\/a>.\nWillis reminds us that the 2 nukes already at Plant Vogtle were projected\nto be four nukes for $600 million and ended up being two for $9 billion.\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nEveryone has heard the saying \u201cFool me once, shame on you;\nfool me twice, shame on me.\u201d If the Vogtle expansion costs\nballoon, as many analysts expect, it will cost\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<!--more-->\n<blockquote>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.southerncompany.com\/smart_energy\/smart_power_vogtle.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017d3ce6f77d970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017d3ce6f77d970c-pi.jpg\"  alt=\"Plant Vogtle construction\"  \/><\/a>\nthe people of Georgia\ndearly. Whether cool heads prevail and the Vogtle expansion overruns\nare ended by an early decision to stop work, or if Southern Company\nand its supporters keep stone-walling as costs spiral into the\nstratosphere, it certainly seems unthinkable that Georgia will\nremain silent and let Southern Company once again walk away\nunscathed with a boatload of windfall profit.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe people of Georgia\ndeserve a thorough investigation of how we got to this point. If it\ncan be shown that Southern Company or their accomplices under the\nGold Dome intentionally misled the people of Georgia as to the need,\nbenefits or probable costs of this extraordinarily expensive\nboondoggle, every possibility for prosecution should be pursued.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nFor business to prosper in Georgia in the future, it must be made\ncrystal clear that massive, economically disastrous political\nboondoggles at the expense of the public are no longer acceptable\nhere.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nIf you want to stop the nuke boondoggle, you can\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/10\/elect-georgia-public-service-commissioners-to-represent-you.html\">\nelect some Georgia Service Commissioners<\/a>\nwho aren&#8217;t beholden to the utilities they regulate.\nYou can\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/05\/who-voted-for-georgia-powers-nuke-rate-hike-cwip.html\">\nelect some legislators<\/a>\nwho did <em>not<\/em> vote for that CWIP stealth tax rate hike.\nYou can vote\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/10\/when-can-you-vote.html\">\ntoday, and any other weekday this week,\nor Saturday, or on Election Day,<\/a> November 6<small><sup>th<\/sup><\/small>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"An excellent article about the problems with Georgia Power&#8217;s new nukes on the Savannah River gets at something you may not know: they can charge you for them even if they&#8217;re cancelled!
