A demolition request came up in 2012, that&#8217;s when she\r\nhelped start a campaign to save it.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&ldquo;We held meetings and we had people come testify as to what the mill\r\nmeant to them. And we worked really hard,&rdquo; King said.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/06\/video-playlist-of-remerton-city-council-work-session-rcc-2012-06-04.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.ytimg.com\/vi\/QL6ue2tdtfU\/default.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nOne year to the day after\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QL6ue2tdtfU&#038;list=PL0645F5D8B89969F5&#038;index=1\">\r\nEmily Foster<\/a>\r\nand\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OFFIMtKLzCs&#038;list=PL0645F5D8B89969F5&#038;index=2\">C\u00e9line H. Gladwin<\/a>\r\nspoke \r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/06\/video-playlist-of-remerton-city-council-work-session-rcc-2012-06-04.html\">\r\nin a Remerton City Council Work Session<\/a>,\r\nNina King gave this elegy for the mill on WCTV.\r\nMore people spoke at the\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/06\/remerton-mill-discussion-rcc-2012-06-11.html\">\r\n11 June 2012 Remerton City Council Regular Session<\/a>,\r\nand Ransom Gladwin wrote\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/09\/save-the-remerton-mill-ransom-gladwin.html\">\r\na letter to the editor of the VDT<\/a>.\r\nStill more people spoke at the\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/09\/citizens-plead-for-strickland-mill-then-a-surprise-offer-rcc-2012-09-10.html\">\r\n10 September 2012 Regular Session<\/a>\r\nat which the final decision was made.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/8957657297\/sizes\/z\/\" title=\"John S. Quarterman\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7392\/8957657297_3c726aa312_m.jpg\" alt=\"John S. Quarterman\"><\/a>\r\nWell, I understand that many people around here think if a building\r\nis old or unusable for its original purpose it&#8217;s just an eyesore\r\nready to be pulled down. But we could think further, as I mentioned on camera:\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.visit-historic-savannah.com\/cotton-exchange.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" width=\"77\" src=\"http:\/\/www.visit-historic-savannah.com\/images\/Cotton_exchange2.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nIt could have been something like\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.columbusga.org\/parks\/park_sites\/riverwalk.htm\">\r\nthe Riverwalk in Columbus<\/a>\r\nwhich a cotton mill is a feature of that\r\nor like the old\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.visit-historic-savannah.com\/cotton-exchange.html\">\r\nCotton Exchange in Savannah<\/a>,\r\nbut no, they&#8217;re tearing it down.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nI also remarked that it was a treasure that should have been on the\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/nr\/\">\r\nNational Register of Historic Places<\/a>.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiatrust.org\/news\/2009pip\/bibb.php\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.georgiatrust.org\/images\/2009pip\/tn\/bibb_mill_large.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nIt turns out that Bibb Mill in Columbus, threatened with demolition in 2007,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiatrust.org\/news\/preservation_issues\/bibb_mill.php\">\r\nwas listed on<\/a>\r\nThe Georgia Trust\u2019s 2009 list of\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.georgiatrust.org\/news\/2009pip\/bibb.php\">\r\nPlaces in Peril<\/a>.\r\nCuriously, two weeks after it was listed, it caught fire and burned\r\nin October 2008.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\nEven after the fire, the Bibb Mill serves as\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/archives.columbusstate.edu\/digital_collections\/bibb_city.php\">\r\na focus of oral and other history and education<\/a>:\r\n<blockquote><a href=\"http:\/\/www.columbusga.org\/parks\/park_sites\/riverwalk.htm\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" width=\"200\" src=\"http:\/\/www.columbusga.org\/parks\/park_sites\/images\/map_riverwalk400.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nThe Bibb spun more than just cotton; it spun a community.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nThe Riverwalk goes to Bibb City, which was the Remerton of Bibb Mill.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nBack in Remerton, Greg Gullberg remarked:\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/8958855548\/sizes\/z\/\" title=\"Smokestack\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2865\/8958855548_c4e2c24257_m.jpg\" alt=\"Smokestack\"><\/a>\r\nThe mill has been closed for almost a decade. The owner couldn&#8217;t\r\nafford renovations and the city couldn&#8217;t afford to take it. Now only\r\nthe smoke stack will remain.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\nGlenn Gregory on behalf of\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/09\/who-are-the-owners-of-the-remerton-mill.html\">\r\nthe owners<\/a>\r\nasked the Remerton City Council 10 September 2012\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/8957656193\/sizes\/z\/\" title=\"Demolition\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7367\/8957656193_d84fce401d_m.jpg\" alt=\"Demolition\"><\/a>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2tx-22xwnns&#038;t=1m35s\">\r\nwhether the council would consider accepting if the the owners donated\r\nthe 2.88 acres and the original building<\/a>.\r\nThey said they&#8217;d have to think about it.\r\nAnd apparently they didn&#8217;t accept it, or the owners didn&#8217;t donate it,\r\nbecause the demolition is going on right now.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/8958766674\/sizes\/z\/\" title=\"Greg Gullberg of WCTV\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7322\/8958766674_7169c0954a_m.jpg\" alt=\"Greg Gullberg of WCTV\"><\/a>\r\nThe WCTV anchor wrapped up:\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\nEyewitness News tried calling\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/09\/who-are-the-owners-of-the-remerton-mill.html\">\r\nthe owner<\/a>, Joe Tillman.
