\nThe sealing of the school-to-prison pipeline in Meridian, Miss. has
\nofficially started after a U.S. District Court judge approved what
\nthe Department of Justice is calling “a landmark consent
\ndecree” that features a “far-reaching plan to reform
\ndiscipline practices … that unlawfully channel black students out
\nof their classrooms and, too often, into the criminal justice
\nsystem.\n<\/p>\n

\nIn March, the Justice Department reached agreement with the Meridian
\nPublic School District to decrease excessive suspensions and
\nexpulsions of mostly young black students for trivial infractions
\nlike wearing the wrong colored socks. Kids were lucky if they were
\nonly suspended — in many of these cases, schools called the
\npolice to arrest the students, as young as 10 years old, and send
\nthem to juvenile facilities, as reporter Julianne Hing found last
\nNovember.\n<\/p>\n

\nThis consent decree essentially cancels most, if not all, police
\nintervention for any issues that ca be “safely and
\nappropriately handled under school disciplinary procedures.”
\nThis includes: disorderly conduct, school disturbances and
\ndisruptions, loitering, trespassing, profanity, dress code
\nviolations, and fighting that doesn’t include physical injury or
\nweapons. Further, the school district can not share any information
\non students’ discipline records with any law enforcement agency
\nunless court-ordered. It also requires schools to track discipline
\ndata, including by race, and then take corrective action if they
\nfind racial disparities.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
