{"id":371,"date":"2012-10-28T16:56:01","date_gmt":"2012-10-28T20:56:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/10\/support-plummeting-for-charter-school-amendment.html"},"modified":"2012-10-28T16:56:01","modified_gmt":"2012-10-28T20:56:01","slug":"support-plummeting-for-charter-school-amendment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/10\/support-plummeting-for-charter-school-amendment.html","title":{"rendered":"Support plummeting for charter school amendment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nSupport for the charter school amendment,\npreviously falling, is now dropping like a rock.\nSaba Long wrote the Saporta Report 15 October 2012,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/saportareport.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/latest-polls-show-the-charter-school-amendment-vote-will-be-close\/?utm_source=rss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=latest-polls-show-the-charter-school-amendment-vote-will-be-close\">\nLatest polls show the Charter School Amendment vote will be close<\/a>,\nbut the actual poll results, when compared to previous polls,\nincluding those before T-SPLOST lost by a landslide,\nsay Amendment&nbsp;1 is going down in flames.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<a title=\"Georgia Charter School Polls 2012-10\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/8132121203\/sizes\/m\/\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017d3d1159e3970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017d3d1159e3970c-pi.jpg\"  alt=\"Georgia Charter School Polls 2012-10\" \/><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThat poll conducted 4 and 5 October showed 34.2% saying they would definitely\nvote no and 18.06% saying probably no.\nThat&#8217;s 52.26% No, which is far higher than\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/09\/support-for-charter-school-referendum-falling.html\">\n26.2% only a month before.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe pollsters, HEG-GPS, say,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/library.constantcontact.com\/download\/get\/file\/1102776244344-213\/Corrected+Charter+School+Polling+Memo_GEE_101012+%283%29.pdf\">\nRe: October 4-5 Charter School Amendment Survey,<\/a>\n15.35% responded Probably Yes and only 9.30% said Definitely Yes.\nThat&#8217;s 24.62% Yes,\nfar down from the 48.3% Yes of a month before.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nYet only 23.12% responded Unsure,\nwhich is hardly changed from 25.5% a month before.\nIt sure looks to me like this is not just undecideds switching to No.\nIt looks like a lot of formerly Yes votes are switching to No.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIt looks even worse compared to T-SPLOST.\nTwo weeks before the 31 July Primary election,\n\n<!--more-->\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/07\/t-splost-losing-statewide-but-not-in-region-11.html\">\n11Alive reported 36% Yes, 48% No, and 16% Undecided<\/a> in a poll\nabout T-SPLOST statewide.\nThat wasn&#8217;t nearly as bad for T-SPLOST (12% spread in favor of No)\nas the October poll is for the charter school amendment (27.64% spread\nin favor of No).\nThe October 52.26% No is already almost as bad for the charter school\namendment as\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/08\/t-splost-lost.html\">\nthe actual vote against T-SPLOST,<\/a>\nwhich was 58% No to 42% Yes in our Region 11 and also in Region 12 (Coastal).\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe October poll also asked about\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/09\/charter-school-preamble-biased-like-t-splost.html\">\nthe preamble that is biased like the one for T-SPLOST was.<\/a>\nThe pollsters found that about a quarter (26.25%)\nof people asked about it said\nthe preamble <em>would<\/em> cause them to change their vote.\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\nBased on the 40+% of overall respondents who received this question, we estimate\nthat the Preamble could impact the election results by up to 10 points in\nfavor of passage.\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nThat&#8217;s probably good news for the pushers of the charter amendment,\nbut the preamble propaganda is not going to be enough.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nLook at this from the pollsters&#8217; writeup:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n3. Methodology. The poll of 1,216 likely voters was conducted October 4 and 5, 2012 by IVR\/autocall. Recipients were randomly selected and dialed statewide. The data presented is not weighted to allow for personalized weighting. The survey poll consisted of:\n<ul>\n<li>\nWomen (53%)\n<\/li>\n<li>\nMen (47%)\n<\/li>\n<li>\nRepublicans (61% self identified as strong or leaning Republicans)\n<\/li>\n<li>\nDemocrats (27% self identified as strong or leaning Democrats)\n<\/li>\n<li>\u201cOther\u201d (12% self identified as something other than Republican or Democrat)\n<\/li>\n<li>Margin of error \u00b1 2.81\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\n<table style=\"float:right;\"  style=\"font-size:80%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>&nbsp;<\/th>\n<td align=\"right\">Republicans<\/td>\n<td align=\"right\">Democrats<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<th>Def. + Prob. Yes<\/th>\n<td align=\"right\">29.09%<\/td>\n<td align=\"right\">12.32%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\nHm, almost 2 to 1 Republicans to Democrats in the sample.\nBut the poll&#8217;s Key Crosstabs show what I&#8217;ve summarized\nin the table to the right.\nWhile Republicans are actually against the amendment 46.82% No to 29.09% Yes,\nDemocrats are even more against it, 64.54% No to 12.32% Yes.\nAnd there are\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.politifact.com\/georgia\/statements\/2012\/sep\/10\/mike-berlon\/which-party-has-more-supporters\/\">\nabout as many Democrats as Republicans in Georgia.<\/a>\nSo if the pollsters had sampled as many Democrats as Republicans,\nthe poll results would be even worse for the amendment.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nLet&#8217;s recall what the WSJ misunderstood about T-SPLOST going down in flames.\nWhile as recently as yesterday I heard Republicans claiming credit for that\nmassive defeat, actually that Atlanta power grab was loudly opposed\nand massively voted against by Democrats, as well.\nThis charter school amendment Atlanta power grab is at the expense\nof public education, which Democrats overwhelmingly support.\nSo it&#8217;s not surprising that the October poll shows Democrats oppose it\nmuch more than Republicans.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAdd this from the Saporta article:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nIn a phone conversation, pollster Fred Hicks mentioned that slightly\nmore than 60 percent of people who supported T-SPLOST, oppose\nAmendment One. Also, slightly more than 50 percent of people who\noppose T-SPLOST also oppose Amendment One. The remainder of the\nmonth is packed with community forums debating the pros and cons of\nthe issue with plenty of time on the clock to sway the electorate.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nAt the rate Amendment 1 is already falling in the polls,\npermit me to predict:\nthis thing is going down worse than T-SPLOST!\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/10\/wall-streets-next-big-thing-privatizing-public-education.html\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017d3d1159e7970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017d3d1159e7970c-pi.jpg\"  alt=\"Wall Street greed\" width=\"137\" height=\"77\"  \/><\/a>\nBut let&#8217;s not take that for granted.\nLet&#8217;s keep educating people that Amendment 1 is not about education:\nit&#8217;s a power grab by Atlanta at the expense of\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/08\/georgia-would-send-much-more-money-per-student-to-charter-schools-than-to-public-schools.html\">\nour local school boards<\/a>\nand\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/09\/public-schools-to-be-treated-less-favorably-than-charter-schools.html\">\nour local school taxes.<\/a>\nIt&#8217;s\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/10\/wall-streets-next-big-thing-privatizing-public-education.html\">\nWall Street profiteering by privatizing public education.<\/a>\nDo you want your local tax dollars to make richer\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/09\/walton-family-foundation-granted-105-million-towards-ga-charter-schools-in-2011.html\">\nthe Walton family<\/a>\nand\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/09\/outside-money-fueling-charter-school-amendment-referendum.html\">\nthe private charter school companies in Virginia and Michigan\nthat are the biggest donors after Alice Walton and the Walton Foundation\ntowards pushing this amendment?<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAs\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/10\/joint-resolution-in-support-of-quality-public-education-lowndes-and-valdosta-boards-of-education.html\">\nour local school boards jointly resolved:<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/10\/joint-resolution-in-support-of-quality-public-education-lowndes-and-valdosta-boards-of-education.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017d3d1159e9970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017d3d1159e9970c-pi.jpg\"  alt=\"Joint Resolution of VBOE and LCBOE\"  \/><\/a>\nNOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Lowndes County and the\nValdosta City Boards of Education request that the Governor and\nState Legislators commit their support to adequately fund a\nfirst-class K-12 public education for students in Lowndes County and\nValdosta City and across the State of Georgia, believing and\naffirming that public education lifts people from poverty, equalizes\nopportunities, reduces crime and violence, builds bright individual\nand collective futures, and makes democracy real and sure; and\naccordingly, the Boards hereby request that voters of the State of\nGeorgia <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> support the Constitutional Amendment related to state\ncharter schools, which will be on the November 2012 General Election\nballot, as a result of House Resolution 1162.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.votesmartgeorgia.com\/\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017c326fb38d970b\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017c326fb38d970b-pi.png\"   width=\"126\" height=\"176\"  \/><\/a>\nVote No on Amendment 1!\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n<p>\nPS: While you&#8217;re at it, vote\nNo on the multi-year contract Amendment&nbsp;2, as well, <a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/10\/alecs-our-state-legislators-behind-multi-year-ga-constitutional-amendment-referendum.html\">\nwhich was sponsored by the same Georgia Senate ALEC&#8217;s &#8220;our state\nlegislators&#8221;<\/a> who sponsored the two charter school bills in the Senate.\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Support for the charter school amendment, previously falling, is now dropping like a rock.
