\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nThe Japanese government ordered Tokyo Electric Power Co. to build an\r\nunderground wall at the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant to prevent\r\ngroundwater from flowing into basements of reactor buildings.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe government plans to set up a task force with Tokyo Electric,\r\nconstruction companies and plant makers by the end of June to\r\ndiscuss the details, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry\r\nToshimitsu Motegi said today in Tokyo. He made the remarks at a\r\nmeeting with Naomi Hirose, the utility’s president, which was open\r\nto reporters.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nTepco has struggled with handling of contaminated water at the\r\nFukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear plant after a quake and tsunami in March\r\n2011 caused three meltdowns and radiation leaks. The plant site, 220\r\nkilometers (137 miles) northeast of Tokyo, is running out of space\r\nto store radioactive water due to inflowing groundwater, raising\r\nconcerns the operator will dump it into the ocean.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“Given the seriousness of the contaminated water and public\r\nanxiety about the issue, it is essential to have multiple\r\nmeasures,” Motegi said in the meeting. “That’s one of\r\nthe biggest lessons from the Fukushima disaster.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nLast year Southern Company CEO Thomas A. Fanning said about Fukushima,\r\n\r\n“We have learned everything we can learn about the unfortunate circumstances that occured there.”<\/a>\r\nThis year\r\n\r\nhis tune was pretty much the same<\/a>.\r\nThat Southern Company is really good to be able to learn things a year\r\nago that Fukushima’s operator TEPCO is still trying to learn now.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
