It is also plumply profitable. So why\r\nare its owners eager to sell it?\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nThe answer, as with many things involving nuclear power, is a\r\ncombination of economics, geopolitics and the Promethean prospect of\r\nan energy source that is as potentially green and abundant as deadly\r\ndangerous&#8230;.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote><!--more-->\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nAnalysts estimate Urenco&#8217;s market value at about 10 billion euros.\r\nFor all that momentum, though, the company is at a crossroads.\r\nGrowth may flatten in the next couple of years, executives say,\r\nmainly because Japan &mdash; a major user of nuclear power until the\r\n2011 Fukushima Daiichi disaster &mdash; has shut down its reactors,\r\ntaking about 10 percent of the world&#8217;s nuclear energy generating\r\ncapacity offline. And the Japanese have stockpiled substantial\r\namounts of fuel for the day, if ever, that those reactors go back\r\ninto operation.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nWho wants out?\r\nThe British government, the German utilities E.On and RWE, and the Dutch government.\r\nThat&#8217;s all of the owners.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nWho might buy?\r\nAreva (remember that\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/01\/mali-a-french-war-for-uranium.html\">\r\nFrench war in Mali<\/a>\r\nwhich was partly about\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/01\/china-etc-mining-uranium-in-niger-and-mali.html\">uranium mining in Niger<\/a>?), Toshiba, or maybe Abu Dhabi or India or China.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nFortunately, Southern Company probably can&#8217;t afford to buy Urenco,\r\nalready being overstretched with\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/bloomberg-links-ms-kemper-coal-cost-overruns-to-ga-plant-vogtle-nukes.html\">\r\nKemper Coal and the ever-later and more-costly nukes at Plant Vogtle<\/a>.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Maybe Southern Company and Georgia Power should listen to Urenco&#8217;s owners: the nuclear industry is flatlining after Fukushima.
