Fanning<br \/>\nto questions about Kemper Coal from Linda St. Martin of Mississippians<br \/>\nFor Affordable Energy.<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t think that word means what he thinks it means.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nRay Henry wrote for AP yesterday,<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/m.apnews.com\/ap\/db_268748\/contentdetail.htm?contentguid=prE5wBvO\"><br \/>\nSouthern Co. CEO defends Miss. power project<\/a>,\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nThe head of Southern Co. called the decision to write off $540<br \/>\nmillion in extra costs on a Mississippi power plant &#8220;a bitter pill<br \/>\nfor us to swallow,&#8221; but he defended the project Wednesday as a<br \/>\nlong-term investment for the large utility.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSouthern Co. has absorbed the unexpected charges of building Plant<br \/>\nRatcliffe in Mississippi&#8217;s Kemper County, a showcase facility<br \/>\ndesigned to capture much of the carbon dioxide produced while<br \/>\nburning local coal to make electricity. The carbon dioxide will then<br \/>\nbe sold to companies that use it to extract oil. If successful,<br \/>\nsupporters say the plant would prove the United States can still<br \/>\nrely on coal as a fuel even if it moves to trim carbon dioxide<br \/>\nemissions, a gas blamed for global warming.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nLosses from the plant, a project of Southern Co. subsidiary<br \/>\nMississippi Power, proved a drag on the parent company&#8217;s net income,<br \/>\nwhich fell 78 percent to $81 million during the first three months<br \/>\nof the year compared to $368 million during the same period last<br \/>\nyear. Mississippi Power said it will not pass the extra costs on to<br \/>\nits customers.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;That was a bitter pill for us to swallow,&#8221; CEO Thomas Fanning said,<br \/>\nresponding to a question during an annual meeting of shareholders in<br \/>\nGeorgia. &#8220;But it was appropriate. It shows, I think, appropriate<br \/>\ncorporate responsibility in this issue.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nSO&#8217;s sudden attack of corporate responsibility coincided with<br \/>\nthe MS Public Service Commission capping the costs MS Power could<br \/>\npass on to its ratepayers.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/bloomberg-links-ms-kemper-coal-cost-overruns-to-ga-plant-vogtle-nukes.html\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8402\/8693270998_ac6ea3700b_n.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\nFanning didn&#8217;t mention (but<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/poor-southern-company-losing-money-on-kemper-coal-in-mississippi.html\"><br \/>\nMS Sierra Club has<\/a><br \/>\nthat the MS legislature in February approved letting MS Power issue<br \/>\nup to $1 billion in bonds to cover further cost overruns.<br \/>\nIf MS Power and SO are so responsible, why did they lobby for those bonds?<br \/>\nAnd if SO is so responsible, how about<br \/>\neat the cost overruns for Plant Vogtle, as well?<br \/>\nBetty Liu of Bloomberg, among others,<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/bloomberg-links-ms-kemper-coal-cost-overruns-to-ga-plant-vogtle-nukes.html\"><br \/>\nlinked those two projects<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nOne project critic, Linda St. Martin, representing Mississippians<br \/>\nFor Affordable Energy, challenged Fanning on whether the company has<br \/>\naccounted for all costs.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;What is going to be the next shoe that falls?&#8221; she said.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nFanning claimed not building Kemper Coal would make the citizens<br \/>\nof Mississippi more dependent on natural gas (I heard him say that).<br \/>\nCorporate responsibility would include building solar power in MS<br \/>\nand across the southeast instead.<br \/>\n<\/P><\/p>\n<p>\nFanning&#8217;s new rule<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/05\/sierra-club-goes-to-southern-company-stockholder-meeting.html\"><br \/>\nprohibited videoing not authorized by SO<\/a>,<br \/>\nbut<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RzziTfiJ1cQ\"><br \/>\nLinda St. Martin made her own video back in March:<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;font-size:80%\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RzziTfiJ1cQ\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nIf they want to build that power plant, I don&#8217;t care.<br \/>\nBut if they want me to pay for it, untried, untested,<br \/>\nwhether it ever kicks out a kilowatt of energy or not,<br \/>\nI say no, no.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\nRay Henry tweeted this late yesterday:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p>CLARIFICATION: CO2 at Kemper will be sold to oil companies, not stored at site. <a href=\"http:\/\/t.co\/5WZ2qXdJtf\" title=\"http:\/\/apne.ws\/10R2x0C\">apne.ws\/10R2x0C<\/a> (from @<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ap\">ap<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Ray Henry (@rhenryAP) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rhenryAP\/status\/337379615377092609\">May 23, 2013<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\nThat&#8217;s right, SO&#8217;s &#8220;clean coal&#8221; project will contribute to extracting<br \/>\nmore oil, which, when burned, will produce more CO2!<br \/>\nDoes this seem like a good idea to you when more energy sunshine falls on<br \/>\nMississippi in one day than Kemper Coal will ever produce?\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/proactvoice.wordpress.com\/2012\/01\/06\/take-action-stop-kemper-coal\/\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/proactvoice.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/01\/kemper-coal-take-action-picture.gif?w=320&#038;h=212\"><\/a><br \/>\nWhen will Tom Fanning and Mississippi Power (whoever is running it now),<br \/>\ntake real corporate responsibility and cancel Kemper Coal in favor<br \/>\nof solar power in Mississippi and across the southeast?\n<\/p>\n<p>\n -jsq<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Corporate responsiblity,&#8221; answered Southern Company CEO Thomas A.
