Tinton Falls Solar is the largest\nphotovoltaic project in New Jersey.\n<\/li>\n<li>\nSouthern Sky Renewable Energy LLC&#8217;s 5.6 MW Canton Landfill Solar\nProject in Canton County, Massachusetts is online. This photovoltaic\nproject is built on the closed and capped Canton Landfill. It is the\nlargest solar facility in New England. The electricity generated is\nsold to the Town of Canton under a long-term agreement.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nNew Jersey again!\n20 Megawatts is even larger than the\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/06\/company-installs-solar-and-leases-it-to-new-jersey-school-you-cant-do-that-in-georgia.html\">\n6.1 MW at Lawrenceville School.<\/a>\nAnd Massachusetts, even farther north.\nLet&#8217;s also look just south of us:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hypowerinc.com\/renewable\/projects\/solar-farm-at-lakeland-linder-regional-airport\/solar-farm-phase-2-at-lakeland-linder-regional-airport\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017c32fc173c970b\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017c32fc173c970b-pi.jpg\"    \/><\/a>\nSunEdison&#8217;s 3.6 MW Phase 2 Lakeland Regional Airport Solar Project\nexpansion in Polk County, Florida is online. The Lakeland Regional\nAirport Solar has a total capacity of 6.3 MW. It is the largest\nphotovoltaic project in Florida. The electricity generated is sold\nunder long-term contract to Lakeland Department of Electric Water\nUtilities.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nAh, but\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/05\/in-georgia-competitive-is-not-for-you.html\">\nthat&#8217;s illegal in Georgia!<\/a>\nHere you can sell electricity only to your one and only monopoly utility,\npredetermined for you by the 1973 Territorial Electric Service Act.\nMaybe we should change that?\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Lakeland Chamber of Commerce\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.lakelandchamber.com\/2011\/03\/lakeland-electric-announces-5-5mw-ac-solar-farm-to-be-deployed-at-lakeland-linder-regional-airport\/\">\nhelped promote that solar project.<\/a>\nMaybe better PR than\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/10\/vdt-and-chamber-feuding-about-which-is-the-most-negative.html\">\nfeuding with the newspaper?<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAlso only slightly farther south of us,\n\n<!--more-->\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleanenergyauthority.com\/solar-energy-news\/cps-energy-sunedison-30-mw-san-antonio-081512\">\nSunEdison completed in August\n30 MW around San Antonio, Texas:<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\nThe latest project is the 10 megawatt,124-acre Somerset Solar Farm,\nwhich is on trackers to help it collect more sunlight. The project\nwill produce enough electricity to power about 1,600 homes. The two\nother parts of the project were the Centennial Solar Farms 1 &amp; 2\ncompleted in June in south Bexar County at the San Antonio Water\nSystem Dos Rios Water Recycling Center. All projects were financed\nby Citi.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nPrivate financing for solar projects at a wastewater plant,\nlike the 200 MW we already have here at Mud Creek Wastewater Plant,\nbut bigger.\nHm, if we fixed the 1973 law, maybe we&#8217;d get more private financing!\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSan Antonio is actually planning\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleanenergyauthority.com\/solar-energy-news\/400-mws-of-new-solar-to-san-antonio-072512\">\n400 MW more solar power.<\/a>\nThey&#8217;re doing it through their municipally owned power company, CPS Energy.\nThat&#8217;s something that is legal in Georgia, if your city has a municipal\npower company.\nNo city in Lowndes County does.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nBut\nAdel, Quitman, and Thomasville do,\nor at least they&#8217;re\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.meagpower.org\/Participant\/Map\/tabid\/98\/Default.aspx\">\nmembers of MEAG,<\/a>\nGeorgia&#8217;s municipal electric generation group.\nMaybe one of them will do what Valdosta doesn&#8217;t seem to be doing:\nget on with solar power here in sunny south Georgia.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSolar and solar jobs would go up a lot faster without that\n1973 Act getting in the way.\nYou can vote right now for two new Georgia Public Service Commissioners\nand for new legislators who could fix that.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"What are these new solar projects?
