\r\nHow many of the distribution centers here have solar panels on top?\r\nOr schools?\r\nOr government buildings?\r\nOr businesses?\r\nNone.\r\nBut sunny<\/strike> far-north-next-to-Canada Buffalo has them.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nFedEx Trade Networks began construction Tuesday on its new\r\ndistribution center in the Town of Tonawanda, giving hope to local\r\ndevelopment officials that the company’s expansion will boost the\r\nBuffalo Niagara region’s efforts to become a distribution and\r\nlogistics hub.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“It really drives home the value of this region as a center\r\nfor logistics in the global economy,” said Kenneth Adams,\r\npresident and chief executive officer of Empire State Development,\r\nthe state’s main economic development agency.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“It plays to the inherent strength of the region,” Adams\r\nsaid. “There could be no better seal of approval for a\r\nlogistics business in this location.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nWe’ve got transportation and logistics and distribution centers here,\r\nbut we don’t have this:\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nFred Schardt, president of FedEx Trade Networks, said the\r\nenvironmental benefits of the company’s 14-acre site within the\r\nRiverview Solar Technology Park off River Road also were a selling\r\npoint. “We understand the importance of doing business in an\r\nenvironmentally sustainable way. It’s very, very important for\r\nus,” he said. “This park allows this to happen.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe FedEx building will include a 100-kilowatt solar array that will\r\nbe integrated into the design of the structure. Those solar panels\r\nare expected to generate 1 million kilowatt-hours of electricity\r\nduring the term of the company’s lease, reducing the company’s\r\nconsumption of fossil fuels by the equivalent of 80,000 gallons of\r\ngasoline, Montante said.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nIf Buffalo, a thousand miles to the north with much less sun,\r\ncan do this, we can, too.\r\nMaybe if we did this, maybe in some of VLCIA’s industrial parks,\r\nmaybe it would attract more businesses….\r\n<\/p>\r\n
