Testing Finds 20 Hot Spots Around Tokyo<\/a>,\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\nOf the 132 areas tested, 22 were above 37,000 becquerels per square\nmeter, the level at which zones were considered contaminated at\nChernobyl.\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\n<a title=\"Reactor diagram\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/8157767337\/sizes\/m\/\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017d3d4f3193970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017d3d4f3193970c-pi.jpg\"  alt=\"Reactor diagram\"  \/><\/a>\nThe Hatch reactors, about 100 miles from here,\nare GE Mark I, the same design as Fukushima.\nSo are five other reactors (marked *) within 500 miles of here.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nNot to worry, Southern Company has\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.southerncompany.com\/nuclearenergy\/pdf\/Emergency_Info_Hatch.pdf\">\nan emergency plan for Plant Hatch.<\/a>\nFor the ten-mile area nearby.\nWith notification on radio in three nearby counties.\nLowndes County?\nNope, not in the plan.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Hatch reactors were designed and licensed for 40 years.\n<a title=\"Plant Hatch Evacuation Zone\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/98706376@N00\/8157799902\/sizes\/z\/\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017d3d4f3198970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017d3d4f3198970c-pi.jpg\"  alt=\"Plant Hatch Evacuation Zone\"  \/><\/a>\nAccording to Greg Land 8 July 2000,\n<a href=\"http:\/\/clatl.com\/atlanta\/plant-hatch-relicensing-draws-fire\/Content?oid=1225118\">\nPlant Hatch relicensing draws fire<\/a>,\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\nAlthough the current 40-year licenses expire in 2014 and 2018, the\nNRC last month began holding hearings on the company&#8217;s request to\nextend the license another 20 years.\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nAccording to the NRC map, at least\nten other reactors within 500 miles of here are 30-39 years old.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWithin 500 miles of Valdosta, there are 32 operating nuclear power reactors.\nThat&#8217;s approximate land miles.\nWhat really matters is air miles, since that&#8217;s the way the wind blows.\nRadioactivity from Chernobyl was first detected near Stockholm,\nabout a thousand miles away.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/08\/ed-asner-against-horse-and-buggy-turkey-point-nuclear-boondoggle.html\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" class=\"at-xid-6a0120a58214e4970b017d3d4f319c970c\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017d3d4f319c970c-pi.jpg\"    \/><\/a>\nTurkey Point near Miami, for example, is less than 500 miles from here.\nYou may recall those reactors as the ones\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/08\/ed-asner-against-horse-and-buggy-turkey-point-nuclear-boondoggle.html\">\nEd Asner was talking about.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nI usually\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/11\/the-power-of-going-solar-john-s-quarterman.html\">\nwrite about the boondoogle economics of nuclear power, especially\ncompared to the faster and less expensive economics of solar and wind power,<\/a>\nbecause economics will be the end of nuclear and the cause of the quickening\nshift to renewable energy.\nBut sometimes it&#8217;s worth mentioning the physical dangers of nuclear power.\nThat&#8217;s not something far away.\nIt&#8217;s quite near here.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nYou have an opportunity tomorrow, Tuesday, November 6<small><sup>th<\/sup><\/small>,\nto vote for Georgia Public Service Commissioners and legislators\n<a href=\"\/blog\/2012\/11\/the-power-of-going-solar-john-s-quarterman.html\">\nwho can imagine solar power in south Georgia.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n-jsq\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"If you think of nuclear reactors as something far away, or as much safer than Fukushima, you&#8217;re in for a surprise.
