Times yesterday,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-ln-san-onofre-restart-20130514,0,3441282.story\">\r\nDecision on San Onofre pushed back to June at the earliest<\/a>,\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nThe plant&#8217;s operator Southern California Edison had hoped at one\r\npoint to have one of the plant&#8217;s two units operating by summer, but\r\nNRC Chairwoman Allison Macfarlane made it clear that will not\r\nhappen.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nMacfarlane told reporters Tuesday after a speech, &#8220;You know, the\r\nprocess is very complicated now. Almost every day it gets a little\r\nmore complicated&#8230;. Right now I can tell you a decision on restart\r\nwon&#8217;t happen until the end of June, certainly after the middle of\r\nJune.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8220;It may get pushed back later,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I don&#8217;t know.&rdquo;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nShe didn&#8217;t say much about the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board (ASLB)\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/05\/nrc-tries-to-ignore-hearing-requirement-for-san-onofre-nuke-restart.html\">\r\ndecision to require NRC public hearings<\/a> before any decision on\r\nrestarting San Onofre,\r\nbut she did say this:\r\n<\/p><!--more-->\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n&#8220;There are potential opportunities for public hearings,&#8221; she said.\r\n&#8220;At this point in time I know there is strong public sentiment for a\r\npublic hearing prior to relicensing, and I understand the concerns\r\nthe folks who want that have, but there&#8217;s multiple moving parts.&#8221;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nSo NRC has already backed off from its initial denial about public\r\nhearings and is now willing to consider them.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nAnd two days ago Abby Sewell reported\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-ln-san-onofre-hearing-20130513,0,1559102.story\">\r\nGroups continue push for video webcast of San Onofre hearings<\/a>,\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nAn initial round of hearings was set to begin Monday in a California\r\nPublic Utilities Commission investigation of the costs to ratepayers\r\nfrom the San Onofre nuclear plant&#8217;s ongoing outage.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nActivists were incensed that a CPUC administrative law judge ruled\r\nagainst allowing videotaping of the hearings, which are set to take\r\nplace in San Francisco, far from the plant&#8217;s location in northern\r\nSan Diego County.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nYesterday she could write:\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nAdministrative judges initially angered activists by not allowing\r\nvideotaping of the proceedings, but later agreed to post a webcast\r\nof the hearings.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nSo far, CPUC has yesterday&#8217;s hearings up in two parts,\r\n<a href=\"rtsp:\/\/208.105.130.169:554\/cpuc\/CPUC_EH051413-1.rm?cloakport=80,554\">\r\nPart 1<\/a>\r\nand\r\n<a href=\"rtsp:\/\/208.105.130.169:554\/cpuc\/CPUC_EH051413-2.rm?cloakport=80,554\">\r\nPart 2<\/a>.\r\nThey&#8217;re in a hokey format, not on YouTube or Vimeo,\r\nbut at least they&#8217;re available.\r\nIn Part 1, they put into the public record some documents from the\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/a4nr.org\/\">\r\nAlliance for Nuclear Responsibility<\/a>\r\nand someone (couldn&#8217;t catch her name)\r\ncontinued cross-examining someone (unnamed)\r\nwho maybe works for Southern California Edison.\r\nThe apparent Socal Edison person mostly didn&#8217;t have the answers\r\nor documents requested.\r\nNo wonder they don&#8217;t want to have real public hearings!\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Two more victories for anti-nuke activists: San Onofre restart decision pushed back at least until June, and webcasts of California Public Utilities Commission hearings going on right now.
