\nAT&T told the FCC last year it didn’t have enough spectrum\nto deploy 4G LTE in less-populous areas, but not it’s deploying\nthe same thing almost everywhere in the U.S.\n<\/p>\n

\nAT&T on Wednesday announced a plan to cover 96% of the U.S.\npopulation with 4G-LTE service by the end of 2014. That’s great news\nfor customers \u2014 but it reveals that AT&T told regulators a\npretty big whopper last year while fighting for its doomed T-Mobile\nmerger.\n<\/p>\n

\n\n<\/a>\nOne of the deal’s fiercest battle points was 4G access outside major\ncities. Without T-Mobile, AT&T (T, Fortune 500) said it was “very\nunlikely” that it would expand 4G-LTE service beyond the 80%\ncoverage threshold it already planned to reach by 2013.\n<\/p>\n

\n“In some of these [less-populous] areas, AT&T simply lacks the\nspectrum necessary to deploy LTE,” the company told the Federal\nCommunications Commission in a written defense of its proposal.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nYet….\n<\/p>\n\n\n

\n

\nFast-forward 11 months. AT&T says that its $14 billion network\ninvestment will allow its 4G service to cover\n\n300 million Americans,<\/a>\nthe overwhelming majority of the U.S. population.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nWhich is what\n\nthe FCC said last year AT&T would do.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n

\nBait and switch.\n<\/p>\n
