Fanning said<\/a>\r\nabout the U.S. nuclear industry and\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qkUlS3UnncU&#038;t=5m56s\">\r\nSouthern Company&#8217;s safety performance<\/a>:\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\nAnd if you look at our performance, we absolutely meet the standards\r\nthat our customers expect and frankly deserve.\r\nSo let&#8217;s start there.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/fire-at-plant-vogtle.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8519\/8622151812_5120196a2e_n.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nSince then SO has\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/01\/failed-concrete-the-bane-of-nuclear-reactors-1.html\">\r\nnot managed to pour the concrete base correctly<\/a> at Plant Vogtle\r\nand\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/01\/vogtle-reactor-vessel-sitting-unprotected-at-savannah-port.html\">\r\nnot managed to get a reactor vessel from Savannah port to the site<\/a>.\r\nAlso\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/fire-at-plant-vogtle.html\">\r\nexisting Vogtle Unit 1 had a fire<\/a>\r\nwhile Unit 2 was shut down for almost all of March 2013.\r\nThe two Plant Hatch reactors, same design as Fukushima,\r\nso far as we know\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/01\/substandard-fire-protection-at-nuclear-plant-hatch.html\">\r\nstill have substandard fire protection<\/a>\r\nand has a chronic problem of\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/03\/nuclear-plant-hatch-radioactive-leaks.html\">\r\nradioactive tritium leaking into groundwater<\/a>.\r\nTritium,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/03\/even-the-smallest-amount-of-tritium-can-have-negative-health-impacts-and-most-nukes-leak-tritium.html\">\r\neven the smallest amounts of which can have negative health effects<\/a>.\r\nAnd what gets into the watershed\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/when-contamination-gets-into-the-watershed.html\">\r\nspreads in the watershed<\/a>.\r\nThe U.S. nuclear industry in general has problems with\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/alcohol-drugs-and-broken-nuke-equipment.html\">\r\nalcohol, drugs, and broken equipment.<\/a>\r\nBut\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qkUlS3UnncU&#038;t=6m8s\">\r\nback to SO CEO Fanning about Fukushima<\/a>:<!--more-->\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/05\/exit-strategy-for-when-this-big-nuclear-bet-goes-bad-john-s-quarterman-so-2012-05-23.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b016766d9ffd4970b-pi.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nNow let&#8217;s go to Fukushima, and our decision to move forward\r\nwith Plant Vogtle.\r\nFukushima was a tragic event.\r\nThe United States nuclear power industry offered assistance.\r\nWe have learned everything we can learn about the unfortunate circumstances\r\nthat occured there.\r\nAnd we are applying those learnings here,\r\nas we apply learnings from anywhere that we think can improve\r\nour own performance.\r\nThat is a characteristic of the nuclear industry\r\nin the United States.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/12\/original-nuclear-plant-vogtle-cost-overruns.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017ee66b5458970d-pi.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nSince then Plant Vogtle is\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/03\/from-15-to-19-months-late-plant-vogtle-nukes.html\">\r\nabout a billion dollars over budget and 19 months late<\/a>.\r\nThat&#8217;s still not as bad as last time SO built nukes at Plant Vogtle,\r\nwhen they were\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/12\/original-nuclear-plant-vogtle-cost-overruns.html\">26 times overbudget per reactor<\/a>.\r\nBut it&#8217;s bad enough, when you consider\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/01\/googles-invests-in-wind-and-solar.html\">\r\nGoogle already spent less and got almost as much power from wind and solar<\/a>.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nFormer NRC Chair Jaczko says\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/two-former-national-nuclear-regulatory-chiefs-stop-nukes.html\">\r\nall 104 operating U.S. power stations\r\nare unsafe and need to be shut down<\/a>.\r\nThat includes\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/05\/san-onofre-inside-source-keep-it-shut-down.html\">\r\nkeeping San Onofre shut down<\/a>.\r\nAnd that means we shouldn&#8217;t be building more at Plant Vogtle.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"At last year&#8217;s Southern Company Stockholder Meeting, Southern Company CEO Thomas A.
