\r\n“There is something grossly wrong,” said the inside source, a safety\r\nengineer who worked at San Onofre and has 25 years in the nuclear\r\nfield.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe source, who requested anonymity, is not alone in concerns over\r\nthe safety San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS).\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe concerns stem from inside the concrete containment walls, which\r\nhouse steam generators unique to the plant.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nJapanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) built\r\nreplacement generators for the aging nuclear plant in 2010 and 2011.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“There were many, many changes,” said Dr. Joe Hopenfeld, a former\r\nemployee of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). He described\r\nhimself as pro-nuclear.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nHopenfeld spent his entire professional life working with steam\r\ngenerators and nuclear power. Though he lives in Maryland, he is\r\nfamiliar with San Onofre, which is run by Southern California Edison\r\n(SCE).\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe new generators were designed to provide low cost power for\r\ndecades. Instead, they shut it down in just eleven months because of\r\na radiation leak.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“The manufacturer didn’t have experience in this size unit,” said\r\nHopenfeld. “I have reviewed thousands of pages of assessment and\r\nreports that Edison has submitted.”\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nHe says the 2011 radiation leak that shuttered the plant revealed a\r\npotentially catastrophic problem with the tubes that carry scalding\r\nwater.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“As far as I’m concerned, it’s a very serious risk,” Hopenfeld said.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nSocal Edison of course says everything will be safe.\r\nThis is the same nuke operating company that\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\n\r\nknew San Onofre’s steam generators\r\nwere flawed before it installed them<\/a>.\r\nThe TV station said NRC had offered no comment on the insider story.\r\nWell, here’s\r\n\r\nvideo of NRC failing to answer activists’ questions about the\r\ndefective generators, and failing to show the public Socal Edison’s\r\nrestart plan<\/a>.\r\n<\/p>\r\n
