He described<br \/>\nhimself as pro-nuclear.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nHopenfeld spent his entire professional life working with steam<br \/>\ngenerators and nuclear power. Though he lives in Maryland, he is<br \/>\nfamiliar with San Onofre, which is run by Southern California Edison<br \/>\n(SCE).\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe new generators were designed to provide low cost power for<br \/>\ndecades. Instead, they shut it down in just eleven months because of<br \/>\na radiation leak.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;The manufacturer didn&#8217;t have experience in this size unit,&#8221; said<br \/>\nHopenfeld. &#8220;I have reviewed thousands of pages of assessment and<br \/>\nreports that Edison has submitted.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nHe says the 2011 radiation leak that shuttered the plant revealed a<br \/>\npotentially catastrophic problem with the tubes that carry scalding<br \/>\nwater.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;As far as I&#8217;m concerned, it&#8217;s a very serious risk,&#8221; Hopenfeld said.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nSocal Edison of course says everything will be safe.<br \/>\nThis is the same nuke operating company that<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/activists-grill-nrc-on-san-onofre-restart.html\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"https:\/\/i4.ytimg.com\/vi\/GswNqQ82bW4\/mqdefault.jpg\"><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/believe-so-cal-edison-about-san-onofre.html\"><br \/>\nknew San Onofre&#8217;s steam generators<br \/>\nwere flawed before it installed them<\/a>.<br \/>\nThe TV station said NRC had offered no comment on the insider story.<br \/>\nWell, here&#8217;s<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/activists-grill-nrc-on-san-onofre-restart.html\"><br \/>\nvideo of NRC failing to answer activists&#8217; questions about the<br \/>\ndefective generators, and failing to show the public Socal Edison&#8217;s<br \/>\nrestart plan<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nHere&#8217;s<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipetitions.com\/petition\/keep-san-onofre-shut-down\/donate\"><br \/>\na petition<\/a> to keep San Onofre shut down.<br \/>\nAnd U-T San Diego has<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.utsandiego.com\/polls\/2013\/apr\/should-edison-shut-down-san-onofre\/results\/\">a poll<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n -jsq<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An employee still inside and a longtimer since retired both say the San Onofre nuclear reactor should stay shut down.
