Vermont Telephone Co. (VTel), whose footprint covers 17,500\r\nhomes in the Green Mountain State, has begun to offer gigabit\r\nInternet speeds for $35 a month, using a brand new fiber network.\r\nSo far about 600 Vermont homes have subscribed.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

VTel joins an increasing number of rural telephone companies\r\nwho, having lost DSL share to cable Internet over the years, are\r\nreinvesting in fiber-to-the-home networks.<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe Wall Street Journal reported earlier this year<\/a> that more\r\nthan 700 rural telephone companies have made this switch, according\r\nto the Fiber to the Home Council, a trade group, and Calix Inc.\r\nCALX +3.60%, a company that sells broadband equipment to cable and\r\nfiber operators. That comes as Google’s Fiber project, which began\r\nin Kansas City and is now extending to cities in Utah and Texas,\r\nhas raised the profile of gigabit broadband and has captured the\r\nfancy of many city governments around the country.<\/p>\r\n

“Google has really given us more encouragement,” Mr.\r\nGuite said. Mr. Guite said he was denied federal money for his\r\nupgrades the first time he applied, but won it the second time\r\naround—after Google had announced plans to build out\r\nFiber.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n
