One type is caused by aging\r\ninfrastructure, like old pipes that burst underground and eventually\r\ncause a collapse on the surface. This is more common and is\r\nsometimes called a &#8220;fake sinkhole.&#8221;\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nLike the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/sinkhole-on-us-82-near-tifton-august-2012.html\">\r\nSinkhole on US 82 near Tifton August 2012<\/a>,\r\ncaused by a broken water main, and since filled in.\r\nThe other type is much more common:<!--more-->\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/03\/suwannee-county-sinkholes-wctv.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017d41f26d0f970c-pi.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nThe other type, Dr. Bursik explained, &#8220;is a thing that you get in\r\nlimestone terrains where limestone is near the Earth&#8217;s surface.&#8221;\r\n<p>\r\nThe limestone is easily dissolved in water, which creates a hole\r\nunderground. The surface eventually will not have the support it\r\nneeds, causing a cave in.\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/water.usgs.gov\/ogw\/aquiferbasics\/ext_floridan.html\">\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" width=\"201\" height=\"204\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017d4172dba6970c-pi.gif\"><\/a>\r\nLike\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/03\/suwannee-county-sinkholes-wctv.html\">\r\nthe ones in Suwannee County, Florida<\/a> and points south,\r\nincluding the one\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/03\/sinkholes-in-florida-and-in-lowndes-county-georgia.html\">\r\nthat pulled a man from his bed into the ground in Sefner, FL<\/a>.\r\nAlso in\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/03\/south-ga-officials-expecting-sinkholes-after-rain-while-nytimes-plays-down-the-risk.html\">\r\nAlbany, GA<\/a>,\r\nand the one\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2011\/08\/snake-nation-decision-lowndes-county-commission-tonight-530pm.html\">\r\nthat caused Lowndes County to reroute Snake Nation Road<\/a>.\r\nAll of these are in the same\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/water.usgs.gov\/ogw\/aquiferbasics\/ext_floridan.html\">\r\nFloridan Aquifer<\/a>.\r\n<p>\r\nHow do you know if you&#8217;ve got a sinkhole?\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/08\/sinkhole-in-garage.html\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/images\/6a0120a58214e4970b017d41f26d1e970c-pi.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nOfficials say look for depressions in your yard, shifts in your\r\nhome, and cracks on the pavement surface.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nLike the one\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2012\/08\/sinkhole-in-garage.html\">\r\nunder Michael McCormick&#8217;s garage in Lowndes County<\/a>?\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Fake and real sinkholes form in the same porous limestone underground here in the Floridan Aquifer, and we get an explanation of that from another limestone area in western New York.
