\r\n\r\n\"Georgia:<\/a>\r\nApparently whoever is responsible for a major spill into Georgia waters\r\nneeds to immediately tell GA EPD DNR and the local health department\r\nand post a sign, and\r\n\r\nthe sewage leak at GA 133 into the Withlacoochee River<\/a>\r\nqualifies as a major spill.\r\nThe City of Valdosta reported it as such, but it’s not clear it was their spill (update: it was Lowndes County’s spill<\/a>).\r\nExcerpts below from GA DNR’s guidelines.\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>\r\n

    Major Spill<\/H3>\r\n
      \r\n
    • \r\nAny discharge of raw sewage > 10,000 gallons\r\nto waters of the state\r\n
    • \r\nBOD5<\/sub><\/small>\r\nor TSS = 1.5 x weekly avg. permit limit\r\n
    • \r\nAny discharge resulting in a water quality\r\nviolation\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

      Waters of the State<\/H3>\r\n
        \r\n
      • \r\n\u201cany and all rivers,streams, creeks, branches,\r\nlakes, reservoirs, ponds, drainage systems,\r\nsprings, wells, wetlands and all bodies of\r\nsurface or subsurface water, natural or\r\nartificial, lying within or forming a part of the\r\nboundaries of the State which are not entirely\r\nconfined and retained completely upon the\r\nproperty of a single individual, partnership or\r\ncorporation\u201d\r\n<\/ul>\r\n

            • \r\n\r\nWithin 24 hours\r\n<\/strong>\r\nof becoming aware of spill, report to local\r\nmedia date of spill, location, cause, volume discharged,\r\nreceiving waters, and corrective actions taken to mitigate\r\nimpact.\r\n
            • \r\n\r\nWithin 24 hours\r\n<\/strong>\r\nof becoming aware of the major spill\r\nprovide notice to downstream public water supply\r\nwithdrawal agencies within a 20 mile distance.\r\n
            • \r\n\r\nWithin 5 days\r\n<\/strong>\r\nof spill submit written report to EPD concerning\r\ndate of spill, location and cause, estimated volume and name\r\nof receiving waters, and corrective actions taken to mitigate\r\nimpacts.\r\n
