{"id":3123,"date":"2013-04-24T13:03:21","date_gmt":"2013-04-24T17:03:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/?p=3123"},"modified":"2013-04-25T23:47:46","modified_gmt":"2013-04-26T03:47:46","slug":"arsenic-outings-and-flooding-wwals-watershed-coalition-vlcia-2013-04-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/arsenic-outings-and-flooding-wwals-watershed-coalition-vlcia-2013-04-16.html","title":{"rendered":"Arsenic, Outings, and Flooding: WWALS Watershed Coalition @ VLCIA 2013-04-16"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9fF-JJJzIIk&#038;list=PLshUv86fYkiGcQi_q5mDWOK-oBfKfrtnV&#038;index=13\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.ytimg.com\/vi\/9fF-JJJzIIk\/3.jpg?time=1366822651415\"><\/a>\r\nWater issues strongly affect economic development, so I talked about\r\nthe new WWALS Watershed Coalition at the\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/videos-audit-solar-office-and-more-vlcia-2013-04-16.html\">\r\n16 April 2013 Board Meeting<\/a>\r\nof the Valdosta-Lowndes County Industrial Authority.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"font-style:normal\">\r\nThe VDT declined to speak, so I did.\r\nAfter apologizing for no okra today,\r\nI commended the Authority for talking about the missing agenda items\r\nand for mentioning due diligence and flood control.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"font-style:normal\">\r\nMostly I talked about the new WWALS Watershed Coalition,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wwals.net\">www.wwals.net<\/a>,\r\nincorporated in June 2012, which is about watershed issues\r\nsuch as flooding, water quality, and invasive species related to the Withlacoochee, Willacoochee,\r\nAlapaha, and Little River System.\r\nI mentioned\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wwals.net\/2013\/04\/13\/getting-water-tested-for-arsenic-and-other-stuff\/\">\r\narsenic in some local well water<\/a>,\r\nwhich <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wwals.net\/2013\/03\/18\/test-wells-for-arsenic-south-health-district\/\">\r\nthe Department of Health has finally said should be tested<\/a>,\r\nthree years after\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wwals.net\/2013\/04\/10\/water-filter-to-remove-arsenic-and-lead\/\">\r\nJanet McMahan discovered it was a problem<\/a>.\r\n\r\nI invited VLCIA board and staff to two upcoming WWALS events:<!--more--><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wwals.net\/2013\/04\/19\/south-georgia-author-janisse-ray-fundraiser-for-wwals-watershed-coalition\/\">\r\n<img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8244\/8662295239_6bfef0a9e2_n.jpg\"><\/a>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wwals.net\/2013\/04\/16\/withlacoochee-river-at-franklinville-16-april-2013\/\">\r\n20 April 2013 Withlacoochee Paddle<\/a>, which has since happened,\r\nand unfortunately none of them paddled.\r\n<li>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wwals.net\/2013\/04\/19\/south-georgia-author-janisse-ray-fundraiser-for-wwals-watershed-coalition\/\">\r\n11 May 2013 Janisse Ray reads at a fundraiser at Black Shank Pavillion in Tifton<\/a>.\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>\r\nWWALS board meetings are every second Wednesday of the month,\r\nusually at the IHOP in Adel because it&#8217;s centrally located.\r\nWWALS is communicating with Valdosta and\r\n<a href=\"www.wwals.net\/2013\/04\/13\/watershed-meeting-organized-by-army-corps-of-engineers\/\">\r\nvarious organizations<\/a> about\r\nflooding and other watershed-wide issues, which in my opinion\r\nhave to do with things like too much clearcutting without\r\nconsideration for where the water goes, too much development\r\nwithout consideration for what the impervious surface would do,\r\n(to my surprise, the Executive Director and several board\r\nmembers nodded along with that)\r\nso it was good to hear them mention flood containment.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nHere&#8217;s\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9fF-JJJzIIk&#038;list=PLshUv86fYkiGcQi_q5mDWOK-oBfKfrtnV&#038;index=13\">\r\nthe video:<\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align:center;font-size:80%\">\r\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9fF-JJJzIIk\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\r\n<br>\r\nArsenic, Outings, and Flooding: WWALS Watershed Coalition\r\n<br>\r\nRegular Meeting, Valdosta-Lowndes County Industrial Authority (VLCIA),\r\n<br>Norman Bennett, Tom Call, Roy Copeland, Chairman, Mary Gooding, Jerry Jennett,\r\nAndrea Schruijer, Executive Director, J.
