\nLocal TV is getting it about solar in Georgia,\nand what’s holding it back!\n<\/p>\n

\n\n<\/a>\nSupporters say it could save some people big on their electric\nbills, but leasing solar panels in Georgia isn’t worth it because of\na current state law.\n<\/p>\n

\nCritics believe it gives Georgia Power a solar monopoly and prevents\nconsumers from saving money.\n<\/p>\n

\nJeff Sain installed solar panels on his Dunwoody house because his\nelectric bill was nearly $600 a month in the summer. With solar his\nGeorgia Power bill plummeted.\n<\/p>\n

\n“The first month’s power bill, I saved 91 percent on my power bill,”\nSain said.\n<\/p>\n

\nPurchasing solar panels required a big outlay of cash. Sain spent\n$32,000.\n<\/p>\n

\nBut companies in 14 states now offer systems that can be leased with\nno upfront costs. However, you get less in savings because you have\nsplit it with the leasing company providing the equipment.\n<\/p>\n

\n“Typical savings if you lease panels as people do in other states\nwill be 30 to 50 percent of your power bill,” Consumer advocate\nClark Howard said.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nThe main law that prevents us getting financing for solar\nlike in\n\n\nabout 46 other states is\n\nthe 1973 Territorial Electric Service Act,<\/a>\nwhich SB 401 would have changed back in February.\n<\/p>\n

\nWSBTV gets it about what Georgia Power is afraid of:\n<\/p>\n

\nSenate Bill 401 would have made it legal for solar companies to sell\nexcess energy. The bill had bi-partisan support but Georgia Power\nopposed it and the bill was shelved for 2012.\n<\/p>\n

\n“The reason they opposed it is they know there would be far more\nsolar installed in Georgia. They are frightened of that,” Howard\nsaid.\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\nGeorgia Power is afraid of\n\nGeorgia Solar Utilities (GaSU), Dr. Smith, and you.<\/a>\nGaSU got the PSC to recommend them to be a utility, but\n\nwill GaSU help change the Territoriality Law<\/a> so we can all get\nfinancing for rooftop solar?\n<\/p>\n
