{"id":3071,"date":"2013-04-22T07:20:51","date_gmt":"2013-04-22T11:20:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/?p=3071"},"modified":"2013-04-22T07:24:16","modified_gmt":"2013-04-22T11:24:16","slug":"gulf-3-years-ago-caspian-5-years-ago-bp-oil-well-blowouts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/gulf-3-years-ago-caspian-5-years-ago-bp-oil-well-blowouts.html","title":{"rendered":"Gulf 3 years ago; Caspian 5 years ago: BP oil well blowouts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2012\/bpcoverup\/\">\r\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float:right;border:none;\" width=\"250\" height=\"176\" src=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/deepwater2.jpg\"><\/a>\r\nTwo years before\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/bp-the-beaches-are-open-for-everyone-to-enjoy.html\">\r\nBP&#8217;s Deepwater Horizon oil rig poisoned the Gulf of Mexico<\/a>\r\n(Saturday was the third anniversary),\r\napparently BP had a very similar disaster in the Caspian Sea\r\nand covered it up.\r\nIs this a company or this the\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/13-oil-spills-in-30-days.html\">\r\n13 spills in 30 days<\/a>\r\nindustry we want piping tar sands crude across\r\nAmerica to the Gulf\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/35-jobs-for-51-coal-plants-of-co2-keystone-xl-pipeline.html\">\r\nfor all of 35 permanent jobs and CO2 emissions like 51 coal plants<\/a>?\r\nThere&#8217;s a cleaner, cheaper, and more energy-independent way:\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/electric-utiltiies-know-about-moores-law-for-solar-power.html\">\r\nsolar<\/a>\r\nand\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/03\/billions-for-cape-wind.html\">\r\nwind<\/a> power can power the U.S. and the world.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nGreg Palast wrote for EcoWatch 19 April 2013,\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2012\/bpcoverup\/\">\r\nBP Covered Up Blow-out Two Years Prior to Deadly Deepwater Horizon Spill<\/a>,\r\n<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nTwo years before the Deepwater Horizon blow-out in the Gulf of\r\nMexico, another BP off-shore rig suffered a nearly identical\r\nblow-out, but BP concealed the first one from the U.S. regulators\r\nand Congress.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nThis week, EcoWatch.org located an eyewitness with devastating new\r\ninformation about the Caspian Sea oil-rig blow-out which BP had\r\nconcealed from government and the industry.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nThe witness, whose story is backed up by rig workers who were\r\nevacuated from BP&#8217;s Caspian platform, said that had BP revealed the\r\nfull story as required by industry practice, the eleven Gulf of\r\nMexico workers &ldquo;could have had a chance&rdquo; of survival.\r\nBut BP&#8217;s insistence on using methods proven faulty sealed their\r\nfate.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nOne cause of the blow-outs was the same in both cases: the use of a\r\nmoney-saving technique&mdash;plugging holes with\r\n&ldquo;quick-dry&rdquo; cement.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nBy hiding the disastrous failure of its penny-pinching cement\r\nprocess in 2008, BP was able to continue to use the dangerous\r\nmethods in the Gulf of Mexico&mdash;causing the worst oil spill in\r\nU.S. history. April 20 marks the second anniversary of the Gulf oil\r\ndisaster.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nThere&#8217;s more in\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2012\/bpcoverup\/\">\r\nthe article<\/a>, such as this:\r\n<\/p><!--more-->\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nWe have learned this week that BP failed to notify the International\r\nAssociation of Drilling Contractors (IADC) about the failure of the\r\ncement. (British companies report incidents as minor as a hammer\r\ndropped.) Notification would have alerted Gulf cement contractor\r\nHalliburton that the process of adding nitrogen to cement posed\r\nunforeseen dangers.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>\r\nAnother failure of transparency that, like\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.l-a-k-e.org\/blog\/2013\/04\/transparency-could-have-prevented-tx-fertlizer-plant-explosion.html\">\r\nlike the Texas fertilizer plant explosion<\/a>,\r\nkilled people.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\nPalast posted\r\n<a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2012\/part-2-bp-covered-up-blow-out-prior-to-deepwater-horizon-2\/\">\r\na followup article the next day<\/a> that lists various ways\r\nthe coverup appears to have been illegal,\r\nand that BP appears to have said Chevron and Exxon knew and didn&#8217;t\r\ntell relevant regulators or Congress.\r\nIs this an industry we can trust to pipe more oil to the Gulf?\r\nAnd if we get on with solar and wind, why do we need any new oil at all?\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>\r\n -jsq\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Two years before BP&#8217;s Deepwater Horizon oil rig poisoned the Gulf of Mexico (Saturday was the third anniversary), apparently BP had a very similar disaster in the Caspian Sea and covered it up.
