\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nIt’s not just Georgia Power that\r\n\r\nraised rates to pay for nuclear and natural gas plants<\/a> and then complained about solar.\r\nOntario has the same scam.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nPayments to nuclear and gas-fired generating plants — not to\r\nrenewable energy suppliers — are the main ingredients in the\r\nbiggest component of your hydro bill.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThat’s the conclusion of a study done for the Independent\r\nElectricity System Operator (IESO), which runs Ontario’s power\r\nmarket.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nRenewable power has frequently been the whipping boy for hydro price\r\nincreases, because of the highly visible prices it commands. It’s\r\nalso a political flashpoint: the provincial Progressive\r\nConservatives have presented a bill in the Legislature that would\r\ngut the renewable energy policies adopted by the Liberals.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/a>\r\nBut a study by Navigant Consulting Ltd. shows that payments to\r\nnuclear and gas-fired generators are responsible for two-thirds of\r\nthe “global adjustment” charge, which is the biggest\r\npart of the “electricity” line in your hydro bill.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\n“Nuclear and natural gas fired generation were the two largest\r\ncontributors to the global adjustment over the study period,”\r\nNavigant concluded. Nuclear plants — both the privately\r\noperated Bruce Power and the publicly owned Ontario Power Generation\r\n— contributed 42 per cent to the global adjustment cost,\r\nNavigant found.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nNatural gas-fired generators contributed another 26 per cent.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nRenewable power — including hydro, wind and solar —\r\naccounted for just 17 per cent of the global adjustment, Navigant\r\nfound.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe remaining 15 per was needed to cover a variety of other costs,\r\nincluding payments to Ontario’s soon-to-be-closed coal plants.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n
