\r\nThe report said the pipeline’s construction would support 42,100\r\nindirect jobs and 3,900 direct jobs during the one- to two-year\r\nconstruction period, which would bring in wages of about $2.05\r\nbillion, as well as another $3.3 billion in other spending. But once\r\nup and running, the operation of the pipeline would only support 35\r\npermanent and 15 temporary jobs, mostly for inspections, maintenance\r\nand repairs.\r\n<\/p>\r\n

\r\n“Based on this estimate, routine operation of the proposed\r\npipeline would have negligible socioeconomic impacts,” the\r\nreport said.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nA\r\n\r\nnew report<\/a> out today from environmental groups shows that the\r\nKeystone XL tar sands pipeline would, if approved, be responsible\r\nfor at least 181 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent\r\n(CO2e) each year, comparable to the tailpipe emissions from more\r\nthan 37.7 million cars or 51 coal-fired power plants.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

\r\nThe State Department EIS dismisses out of hand the implications of\r\nburning the oil we’re projected to burn, saying it is business as\r\nusual. But this business is leading us to a very unusual climate\r\nfuture. The idea of approving the Keystone pipeline becomes more\r\nimpossible as the facts become clearer. We can only hope that\r\nSecretary Kerry will stay engaged in the real debate and make the\r\nright choice for a livable climate.\r\n<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n
